increased throttle response mod

Passing this on. During discussion about catch cans etc, a couple of forum members provided their experience with putting a breather on the nipple fitting on the oil tube(you know where I mean) and capping off the fitting on the intake that was used to inject the vapors coming from the engine.via that oil tube. We all have heard or discussed the "oil in the intake" problem some have been having and the catch can was being used by some to help with that problem. These guys didnt put a catch can on, no instead they did the above AND they claimed a definate increase in throttle response. Well-- heck--I will try it I said---and --------
DAMYN! IT IS TRUE DUDES! VERY NOCTICABLE!
Now I am not saying WOT is better but anything below 3/4 throttle is much more responsive. Seriously. WOT may be better --but it is harder to just feel.
They also claim a smoother idle --I already had a smooth idle so I cant verify that.
This is a good mod. I have the REVI intake and I have already done the throttle body mod(live in GA --duhhhh! ) Have other mods also but those are the ones that I thought that may have an affect on this.
Now the question is "Why"

The tube OD is talking about is a crankcase vent tube that is there for emissions-control purposes. Instead of venting the crancase vapors to the atmosphere, we use the vent and a PCV valve tube to send those vapors to the intake and burn them in the combustion process, just like in a piston engine. One of the first tricks we "old-schoolers" would do on our V-8's was remove the PCV valve and block off the location on the throttle body and replace the PCV with a breather. Lots of oil vapors under the hood and on the valve covers but, hey, we had a purer intake charge. Same thing here with the RX-8.

Good to hear from you. Heck my engines didnt have ANY emmisions on them! I stopped with the car thing in 1970(when they ruined the Corvette with emissions stuff) They did have the breathers on the valve covers but that was all.
They had just started electronic ignitions! For the longest I had to fool with the old distributor with points in them. Thats why my ear and my butt are so sensitive.

Just a theory - crankcase air is hot ?
Also : instead of a breather , why not just run a tube to under the car somewhere like they did in the "old days" .

After just doing the trottle body mod no more then 10 mintues ago in the parking lot I know which tube they are talking about... and I understand the logic but if I'm going to do this little mod I want to make sure im not going to gunk up my engine bay with oil vapors...
Pictures would be nice but basically I take the rubber tube coming from the neck of the oil fill hole... unplug it from the rubber accordian intake tube and then just what? let it sit there? (of course plugging up the newly made hole in the rubber accordian intake tube.
People were saying "add a breather"? what does one of these look like? I dont want to just have a tube leading straight to my oil neck thats wide open where dust can slowly work its way into my oil.
Pictures on how you put a "breather" on the oil "exhaust" tube would be nice, and also pics of how you plugged the hole in the accordian tube would be nice
If i get the information I need I'll definetly do this

did both mods and went for a test drive . At first I thought -wow this really works , then I put it back to stock & it seemed just the same . Perhaps i need to calibrate my butt dyno .

Glad to see results posted. I have been running this mod for several weeks now. There is a huge difference on overall engine behavior. This mod is one of the better ones I have done. It cleared up power loss in hot hot conditions. Running it with stock setup is a major downfall of this car. The car will never see a clean burn with vaccum pulling garbage into the intake stage. The car is doomed from polluted fumes mixing with fuel/air mixture. Very simple. No rocket science needed. I serously doubt track cars have the connection. The cans do a better job than factory setup. With breather setup, no vaccum needed. It has presure coming out to rid condinsation or unwanted fumes. Problem solved, next!

Alright I just did this mod. I plugged the intake pipe and ran a longer hose down to the bottom of the engine bay. I didn't want to pay $10 for a riceboy breather filter :p I actually remember doing this to my civic in high school but even with the filter there was nasty crap all over the engine bay.
BTW, I didn't feel any difference in throttle response or power /shrug

This seems to be a group of cars that have power loss periodicly due to carbon and oil getting in the TB. It may be a good idea to thread prior status and after. Did you have a catch can, breather, or stock? Did you have oil in your intake? In hot weather does your car bog down in hot weather?
I have power loss in hot conditions. My MAF was getting dirty every six months. Not from K&N recharge, but from oil system. I keep oil level 3/4 at all times. When it was stock I had the problems. Driving the 8 since August of 2003. I started chasing the problems in 2005.
I figured if I upgraded parts, I would resolve it over time. Intake, plug wires, clutch, flywheel, midpipe, TB bypass, and the breather. The breather has been more help than those parts. The parts helped for sure, but the octane seems to matter more on my car or something. Everytime I put cheap gas in my car it pings and losses power. Runs the same with the vaccum line connected to the oil stem in hot weather. With the breather it runs like it is 30 degrees cooler. Thats the difference I feel.
I wonder what would happen if I reversed the intake so the MAF sensor was behind all those vaccum feeds. It is in front of all that stuff. It may may be giving false readings for air going into TB. Good discussion topic.

Don't do that.
Think of the vent products as "oily smoke", if you send it over the MAF sensor wires, they will get oily, then carbon up. Once the oil becomes coke, the heated wires become permanently coated, run hotter, and lean out the mixture.
Vent it anywhere you like, except into the MAF.

well because I already had a catch can on (home made with steel wool in it) I just let that be and unplugged the catch can from the intake itself. bought a vinyl cap from Home depo and put that on the intake nipple and secured it with a small plastic tye.
I guess this is one of those mods that will work for some and not for others, for me it is a definate improvement in throttle response. I have had oil in my intake a couple of times.
Good thing about this little mod is that it doesnt really cost anything , easily reversable (if you like) and there are no risks.

Can someone post up pics of the "breather" filter they added and where they "vented" the tubing after removing it from the oil filler neck? I have an idea on what's going one but a pic is worth well you know....
