Installed Lite Flywheel!

Just installed the lite flywheel on my 8. I must say it really wakes the car up in the high RPM range. Best bang for the buck IMO. P.m. for details or reply back on this thread for the install.

Definitely need the details!

How much?

How long did it take to install?

Dyno or G-tech tuning?

Gimme something that makes power when the engine is out of its powerband, like 3-5K

If you've ever driven a car with a lightweight flywheel, the difference is noticeable everywhere. The only downside is starting from a standstill. Can't be lazy or you'll stall.

Along those lines, how much harder is it to get a good launch, both when you're trying to be fast as well as more sedate street driving? I've always stayed away from the lightened flywheels for that reason, although mostly everyone seems to love them.

Well the install was about 1 1/2 hours by my self with a lift and trans stand. I used a 3rd gen lite flywheel and stock clutch setup. It makes a difference overall but alot up top. I used a rx8 auto counter balance from mazda. I spent alot less since i get better prices on stuff but a good kit would cost $450-$495 . doing the job is real easy and no special tools needed except alot of air for the e-shaft nut.

how many kg's was the 3rd gen lightweight fly? I am a little concerned that the MazdaSpeed fly is too light for a daily driver.

What is the wight on the stock RX8 and the Mazdaspeed units? I haven't seen either listed anyplace..

I have a 10lb Jun Ultralight flywheel in my STi V. Only downside is getting it goin' in deep snow, which I don't think my '8 will ever be seeing

I have used 8.5 lb units on both of my RX-7s. I love them. They are easy to drive on the street. I don't understand why anyone thinks it is difficult. It is different but not difficult by any means. They are very noticable everywhere during acceleration. The engine revs faster and the car accelerates faster. The engine also slows down faster too. I love them and will always use them. I personally don't think that you can get too light. I don't care what any company says.

I read somewhere that the RX-8 flywheel was consederably lighter than in any previous Rotaries. I also read that the Renesis' couterbalances were different than other rotaries and different between the Auto and Manual versions too. Did you get the correct one? If you didn't then your engine may be out of balance and that is a bad thing...

I think you read too much on these forums. I bought a mazdaspeed flywheel kit or at least that is what it is called. The part numbers are the same for an auto counter balance. Trust me dont believe everything you read on these forums.

Amen to the above comment. Sometimes it seems the people with the most advice to offer are the ones who don't own an 8, or are unwilling/unable to spend money on the upgrades about which they portray themselves as "experts". I prefer to trust those who are putting their money where their mouths are. It's so much more fun!!

I do plenty of reading on the forums but I agree you can't believe everything that you see here. That's why I do my own researches and studies. If I read that on the forum I would have said so, I read much more than just the forums or the internet for that matter. I've been following the development of the rotary engines since my own '84 12A and I have plenty of technical material related to them. I also have easy access to inside automotive engineering information given that I work for an automotive manufacturer. You'll find out later if your engine is in fact out of balance, things can start to break pretty soon.
