Tuning on Turkey Day!

Today I took advantage of the light traffic and continued tuning the N/A Interceptor-X. The tuning went very, very well, so well in fact that I have the car pulling clean all the way to redline! I started with low speed light throttle(neighborhood) driving, then onto rural driving and finally to highway cruising speeds. Full throttle has been restricted to rolling into W.O.T. in 2nd and 3rd gear and it pulls very smooth! One of the features that make the Interceptor-X unique is the ability the user has to control intake system changes. I have set the changes to occur at aprox the same as stock but will be experimenting with these over the next couple of days. BTW the "Carputer" has allowed heads up tuning, data logging and monitoring of all built in gauges in the Interceptor-X software. The "honey do" list is pretty extensive for tomorrow and the traffic will be terrible but if I can I will do more testing, thanks for the support and stay tuned, Scott
p.s. Does anyone know how to get brown gravy stains out of grey cloth? Damn Bumps LOL

Hi Scott.

Great to see the N/A I-X progressing, any info on dyno runs or stimated HP gains on your testing?

Scott,

I told you to take yesterday off , but since you've decided to work, I have some questions.

First, could you comment on the idle and mileage once you dial in your base map. I'm wondering how much of a difference the leaner mix will make.

Do you have any thoughts on running at cruising leaner than 14.7:1? If you could experiment with that also I would appreciate it.

Maybe if we could get 15 - 20 presales the price could be lowered a bit.. Even so though.. Your still looking at 1500 or more for the unit even if there was a small discount.. I am definitely in if the whp is over 20 regardless of the price.

Glad to hear there has been progress...still sad we know so little and the fact that 20Hp for 2K is just a bad deal.

I really would like this to be the Holy Grail for NA RX8 guys, but it's true that for 2K it's not the best deal.

But...I'll continue to hope...

Sounds good.

Will the NA Intercepter be the same unit as the FI ones that have been setup just shipped with a different map?

I think thats been asked and answered several times, but there are some internal differences to the unit. I think that us that have the unit that goes with the turbo, could still use it if we decided to go N/A, but if you have an N/A unit, you'd have to ship it to Scott to use it with a turbo'd car. Hope that helps.

I hope the NA version still uses the MAP sensor to replace the factory MAF, althought I don't see why it wouldn't

Will it work on automatics? Sorry if it's been covered in an earlier thread.

Hey Scott.. I know it's early but how about some general impressions regarding the car now that you have installed the Int.-X? How is the car in general reacting to the Int-X? How has the throttle response changed since the installation of the product? Is there a noticable difference in some gears as opposed to others?

Etc.. anything else that you may want to add..

Sorry guys.. Just bumping the thread.. Nothing from Scott posted yet..

Brillo,
The idle afr's are in the upper 11's and the cruise is between 14.6 and 15.1, smooth, very, very smooth!

It does use a map sensor for engine calculations.

Isn't that too rich for idle?
What are the AFR's with the stock computer. I remember being in the 14.5 range with my Greddy emanage/ turbo.

Actually everything so far is great! The throttle response is crisp, the cruise is silky smooth and the idle although not perfect is very stable. I just got back from a test drive using our new WB-02 and have been data logging with the software, pulling over making changes and have set the AFR's in the mid 12's at W.O.T. I have not started making changes to the intake staging yet but I will then start making fuel and timing changes to compensate. Stay tuned,Scott

My afr at idle sometimes bounces from 14.9 to 16.5 (lean I know) but is usually constant at 15.2 and idle is fine. The car does not stall even when the afr is lean at idle - it bounces back quickly.

I don't understand why the idle is at 11 AFR. Isn't that unnecessarily rich? Mazda brags about the Renesis' capability to run lean at idle, so go ahead and idle it at 14.7 or something.

You can run ren Renesis at a very lean afr at idle, the problem with a super lean idle is the roughness or shudder that you feel every few seconds. Whats happening is the fuel injectors are cycling on and off rapidly trying to hold the ultra lean afr, and that causes the engine to shudder.

Glad to hear things are progressing well.

My car shudders at 13.0AFR using the Interceptor. It's at 12.5 right now but sometimes has a rough idle at those settings. With the stock map it was at 11.5AFR (and very noticeable fumes).
The stock computer must've been doing something differently at idle.

Yes, it did. I think RG and Maniac here mentioned that the engine idles using one spark plug only. Was it leading or trailing only? Anyways, it enabled the engine to idle at higher AFR, thus saving gas while idling (supposedly). Maybe this is why you guys with Interceptor-X cannot run lean idles anymore. Maybe the unit isn't mimicing the stock spark setting for idle.

I would like to see higher than mid 12's for WOT. Some were taking it as high as 14 in some places, though I think that might be too high for this application. I would like to see mid 13's for the dyno run.

One other question.. Since the Int-x is taking control of the power characteristics of the car does this mean there is no more closed loop anymore? Did you have to tune every rpm up until 9k?

^ I thought Int-X had a target AFR feature which let's you specify a preferred AFR for every RPM and load range? Kinda like FCON. If that's the case, then that would be their version of the closed-loop mode.
