K&N Intake Strange Noise

A while back I got an intake from K&N for showing my car for them at HIN. It's the 2nd gen version. Love it, but now I have an issue with it.

At WOT ONLY when the car is under load (not just revving) I get a rattling sound very strange noise that has never been there before with this same intake. I ran the intake on the car for a really long time before this noise started. There is also some power loss in the upper revvs. I don't know if one of my intake ports is sticking or if its something internal. This is my first rotary so I don't know what engine troubles sound like with the car.

Anyone else had this issue? With any intake for that matter?

BTW I am also running Borla cat back.

FYI - I don't have the noise or the power loss with the stock airbox.

I'd just go back to stock. That intake lost power for me.

It feels like the car stumbles or falls flat between 7k and 9k. It sounds like a Civic with a no intake and a open TB. It gurgels LOUD!

is your MAF connected properly? Have you checked to make sure everything is still secure?

This intake is suppose to be loud like theres no intake when WOT + upper RPM range

make sure everything else is connected and CLEAN. Remember clean ur K&N Version 2 Every 5K miles or so for best performance.

Yeah the MAF is tight. The filter is clean and all connections are very tight at the boot on the TB. I'm wondering if the gasket on the heat shield is piched or shifted. I also might try spraying compressed air over the MAF to clean it a bit.

If I was to buy a new MAF do I need to get the calibration #'s for the right one?

My engine is being replaced when it comes in so maybe this is just the result of having a bad engine as well. I hope not because I really like the sound from the intake.

Because I installed the oem on back and it was breathing much better. K&n intake is a sound mod. It sucks hot air in where as the oem is a CAI.

The K&N version 2 will give you better HP and Torque gains as well as better throttle response. I have the same rattle your talking about take a look at the rubber grommets that are supposed to be on the top of the plate you installed to place the intake tube and the air filter. The cause of the sound is the vibration of the engine cover on the metal of the plate since the grommets aren't there. for me at least that was the problem!!

Good call. I'll check that tonight.

I love the intake and the sound it makes is so absurd I can't help but get on it next to people with the windows down and watch their faces when it freaks them out.

The high rpm power loss is probably not related to the intake as this intake really shine in high rpm. I'd say that was part of your engine issue.

When I first installed this intake I had a rattle at high rpm. It seemed like it was something from behind the instrument cluster. I thought it might be the TSB for a cowl rattle, and the new intake was increasing vibrations and exacerbating the problem. After a couple thousand miles the rattle went away and has not been back..knock, knock.

Update

UPDATE:

Had to be something with the old engine. Got the new engine installed and picked up the car Thursday. Installed the intake and I have no noise.

New engine, new coils, new plugs. No noise.
