K&N Typhoon
Just wondering how long it took for anyone who installed the K&N Typhoon Intake on their 8. I was wondering so I can plan out my day, cause usually I'm busy and I'd like ot have an estimate on how long it would take.. thanks!

Took me about 1/2 hour..the most difficult part is lining up those rubber things that you have 2 place when your putting the intake together..might want 2 have some one help you after that its a breeze. Although you might also want to try the throttle bypass mod because with this intake when it gets hot you'll really here when you get the MIAC noise (marbles in a can). I live in miami and it gets hot and im sure down there in houston it must be hot. So if you do the throttle bypass you'll kill 2 birds with one stone while installing the intake also.

Ah, I already installed it, the "DSC OFF" light came on and so did the traction light(light with the car swirving). I did the 20 brake pump reset thing, and the "DSC OFF" light disappeared, but the swirving car light stayed on, and as I floored my car, I hear backfire pops, that's normal right?

^^^ Dont worry the same thing happen 2 me..after i did the whole reset and shutt the car off the dsc swearving lines will go away..as far as the backfiring im really not sure i dont usually hear it until i rev past like 6k rpm.

Is your Typhoon extremely loud as well?
Mine is so loud that when in the car many of the peices in my dash vibrate under WOT.
I love the sound and also love the fact that it is still civil under normal throttle conditions.
Also mine has a loud whistle when i open the hood and let it idle. I guess the best way to descibe is with a video.

I dont understand y everyone has 2 bash the Typhoon intake..not everything is about having more power...everyone here on the forum does not have 2 have the racing beat intake to all be the same..some of us just like the sound of the intake and are not willing to fork over the extra money for the racing beat. At the end of the day it's just an intake. Hell if he really wanted more power y not sell the car all together, (forget the intake) and buy a 600 hp viper.

Not to mention it makes a car with a great tone sound like a 95 civic with a huge fart can and ebay intake on it. You can hear that thing coming miles away if you are WOT. Maybe you guys are younger and like that kind of thing, but the sound made/still makes me cringe.

I also have another question for you guys that i couldn't find any information on after searching:
When i was taking apart my stock airbox and intake i noticed that the pipeing had what seemed to be motor oil in it. When i put it on my finger it both smelt and felt like motor oil. It wasn't just a little bit either, the part of the stock intake that is crinkled tubbing(don't know what it is called)had enough in it that when i tipped it some would drip from the end of it. In addition to that the filter was competely dirty and it seemed to have that oil stuff on it too. What the hell is up with that?

There is a service bulletin that relocates the oil line to right before the primary intake runners.

Because it's a hot air intake that does nothing but trick the MAF into thinking it's getting colder air than it really is, when the reality of it is that is not. I used one prior, made the same mistake. The stock box is superior in design and quality. Ask a few of the old pro's here about it, I bought it going against what was read quite some time ago and still laugh at myself for being that naive and not listening to people who obviously knew more than I did.

I know I did, and the temp will raise only if u're stuck in traffic. Stock airbox does the same thing. the problem is, K&N's temp raise faster, and it also decrease faster. Stock airbox on the other hand, raise slower thats true, but its harder to cool plastic. so as soon as your stock airbox heats up, it takes a lot more time to cool it off.
As for the *trick MAF into thinking ...* part. I measured it myself. its not that far off and I dont think it's there to trick the MAF.
All open intake sounds like that. I can name tons of mods for Rx-8 that *looks like ricer Civic boys* out there. its just the matter of opinion.
Dont take my word for it. Go check the intake temp yourself before you put your conclusion.

when i had my ap i did an intake temp test with the typhoon and then changed to stock and tested again the typhoon was cooler by about 20 degrees.......and i have no reason to lie, im currently running stock until i buy another typhoon.....

exactly it is all preferance but in my opinion i have the typhoon intake and i think its awesome. its not too loud but it gives the car a good pull and sounds great. its a short ram air intake not a hot air like the kid before said. i personally love it and for the money its the best intake out there

NYCGPS, you were also using the RB ram air duct correct? I think that takes away from my own experience and isn't a fair comparison. Also, your statement falls exactly into line with why I was getting higher intake temps... The majority of my driving is done in very high traffic areas. Stock did a better job in that environment.
MM went into a lot of detail in a different thread explaining exactly what is going on with this and other CAI's giving contradictory information to the MAF. It's not enough to be a large detriment however is definitely note worthy.

We get tons of stop & go traffic in NYC as well, u should know better.
I see temps up and down really fast on K&N, but Stock airbox, well, once its heat up under traffic, it takes a while before it cools off. I've seen it on my computer.
I see some 65 yr old in college ...

Well I wasn't assuming you were driving that car daily through the traffic of NYC, I figured it was more of a toy for you.
The kid comment was directed to the sponsored rx8 with AEM chip and sparco plugs and wires who posted before I did, not you.
