The VFAD or Variable Fresh Air Duct is the air intake pipe. This pipe has 2 separate intake positions. If the main intake pipe is blocked the vacuum created opens a secondary air inlet. Hope that helps.

So after working through the weekend, bits of pieces of time for a couple days, I have the intake installed... I still need to go back over my engine bay and clean everything, but I wanted to take the car out for a spin before I came back to school...
I AM IN LOVE with the sound of this intake. It is sooo LOUD, but def. in a good way. My parents took me out for drinks on Sat. and they were driving beside me home and I let it rip out of one of the lights and they called me and said that the car sounded incredibly loud with their windows up... All in all, I am very satisfied... Thanks to all you fellow owners who helped me with my questions.

congrats on getting it done. im glad everything worked out and that you are happy with the end result. i remember when i first put mine in i couldnt get the smile off my face. i wasnt expectign it to be as loud as it was but i loved it. enjoy it!

If you have the K&N ver2 don't you have the VFAD still in place behind the bumper?
If so, I would put the hoses back to where they belong. The typhoon2 will have more than enough air with the VFAD still functional.
If you don't have the VFAD unit in place. Connect the hose into the the nipple behind the throttle body, Connect the cannister, connect the green connector to the seleniod and cap off the metal hose that is screwed into the airbox tray (or plug up the 4in hose connected to that).
If so, I would put the hoses back to where they belong. The typhoon2 will have more than enough air with the VFAD still functional.

Correct - It's sucking in air from the hot engine bay, so it's not going to run out of air..

it has a heatshield and once the hood is closed, it has very little space for hot air to crawl over. and when the car moves , theres no way hot air can even get in.
No match for AEM/MS CAI of course.

I haven't seen the heat shield, so I can't speak about it, but the car can suck some serious air. Any opening that isn't sealed (like the stock box) will likely have air pulled. Path of least resistance ... so the choice is 1. over a close by unsealed area, or 2. through a long sock in the bumper, and around a 90 degree bend?
How much hot air it gets from it is a different matter, and on a NA car I don't think it'll matter much.

what would be the reason to not remove all the hoses being that it's disconnected anyways? i figured i'd just get them all out since i'm going to be installing the rb duct in the near future...

I have the RB duct, last time when I had my bumper off I should've just seal shut it so air from the radiator wont come up but it was freezing cold so I just changed my fog light and put it back on.
I think K&N tested their stuff with VFAD intact thats why they did not mention anything about the VFAD ?

^ to seal off that gap between the duct and the k&n you might try getting a rubber plumbing connector from your local hardware store. With some elbow grease, and maybe some foam weather stripping, you will effectively seal and extend the duct tube right in front of the air filter. thats what I did and it seems to work pretty well, and this can be done from the engine bay with no need to remove the bumber.

No, I don't think that had any affect on the intake noise. Its really just to provide a more straight and consistent air flow from the duct to the filter (it will fill in the gap between the inner fender and the inlet hole)
Have thought about fabricating some sort of enclosure for the filter element though. The k&n makes so much noise/vibration, that it has caused an intermittent rattle behind my instrument cluster at high rpm (this might be the TSB for the plastic cowl cover that can rattle or squeak but haven't had in the shop to check yet, ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS WITH THE K&N??)

i've been running around w/ my k&n typhoon 2 unscreened now... seems to be fine just idling a little rougher. is there anything really detrimental about now having the screen in place? i mean i don't feel any negative performance...

I've read on here that a few have gone without screens using the RB intake with no ill effects. If your not having idle problems or stalling, I wouldn't worry about getting a new screen. All it's there for is to smooth out the airflow across the MAF.

would the unsmooth airflow cause my MAF to lean or richen the mixture at all? i'm just not sure as to how much this screen really does... it seems to be a pretty big deal w/ the 8's intake system... so much so that all aftermarket kits have called for its use as well... i just wanna make sure it's cool. if it's just gonna cause a little rougher idle... i can deal w/ it... being that they say each screen robs 1hp from our 8's
