Depends on how you get tested. If they check for the CEL from having no CAT, you can get away by hiding the CEL using an accessport, etc.

If they sniff your exhaust, best bet is to switch back to CAT.

Last time I had my emissions done (not on a RX-8) they just plugged me in, ran the test, and I was gone in 5 minutes. No sniff test that I noticed.

Also, I know there is one guy in town who will do anything to make you past. Once time, on a car I had that didn't want to pass, he has me put it in first gear and release the clutch to drop the RPM level nearly to the point of stalling so that it would pass. Lol.

I guess the moral of the story is keep your stock Cat just in case!?

Also... with stock exhaust how much louder does a midpipe make the car?

Depends on the mid-pipe but I have a SR Motorsports cat-less non resonated mid pipe and it is not loud at all with the stock exhaust unless you are at wide open throttle. It is a little "tinny" at part throttle but a nice muffler or resonator will help that. To me it sounds the way it should have sounded form the factory. It doe snot drone on the highway (very important). If I paid (traded my stock cat for mine) for a midpipe it would be the BHR resonated one.

I say save your money. Get an account at a bank you never use so you don't spend it. Then when you have the money to do it right, do it right. An exhaust and NOS will be fun until you blow something out or until you find yourself next to someone that has real mods. Learn your car. Drive it fast and test the limits every day, then in a year or two when you get that shiny turbo you will be a better driver and more capable of handling the power. I also am coming from a Mustang background- the difference is that you can mess around with the mustang just by turning it on, the 8 is a slow car until you say "ok bitch! time to GO!" and then you better mean it. If my 1966 GT could rev to 9K people would die. LoL. So yeah, just enjoy your car.

good advice - i came from a mustang - if you drive that car hard.,not beat it, even though i dont think you realy can beat on an rx8 - not too many cars are ready for that, x factor - the fact you dont give a **** - lol - my mustang had 100 more hp, but i drive alot faster in this rx8

That is some good, appreciated, advice. The more I have been looking into stuff and thinking about it I have come to that conclusion. If I am going to mod this thing, I am going to do it right. Beyond that, I am beginning to enjoy the car as it is more and more. It's a fun car!

How come nobody tells the guy about the AxialFlow shifter kit. Flat out the best money you can spend on the 8. I know it's blatent self promotion but it's the truth just look at any of the threads, members will tell you.
Best part is that you enjoy it every time you drive, even to the market.

Yes buy the AxialFlow short shifter!!! I regret waiting so long to buy it. Till one day I drove my friend AJs 8. I went to shift and my hand sliped off. I was like WTF? wheres the row boat? he was like dude you dont have the AF SS? at that point I knew I had to have it.

yes with a midpipe you will have to put the cat back on...I have heard of ppl passing with a midpipe but very rare and depends on the area you are from.....

like others are saying Nitrous and midpipe would be best and if you get the midpipe and get an AP you can lean the fuel out and get a little better fuel mileage!

i have a small question... when doing a cat delete doesnt that trigger a cel? if so how can u get rid of it without a tune?

I have a Scangauge II and I clear the CEL each morning. The COBB AP is the only one I know of that will turn it off completely. But for me its no big deal, I'm just sitting there waiting for my car to warm up anyway.

The classic stuff that people remove (which doesn't really add up to too much, but those people are hard-core weight-loss people) are all the floor mats, trunk mats, trunk sound-proofing material, etc.

It was mostly a joke though lol... weight loss in this car either comes from replacement or loss of daily-drivability.
