Lightweight flywheel questions?

I talked to a mazda mechanic and he told me that a light weight fly wheel would do more harm than help to my 8. I'm looking for any mod that will help my 8 without compromising the durability of the engine. I've already gone with an intake and exhaust, but I need some help in my next useful mod.

Then why would Mazda offer one for sale and if you pay for them to install they warranty it. Sad to say but the Mazda dealership is the last place I would go for advice on this car.

That is true, they do offer a flywheel.... There are a whole bunch of people on here that have installed a lightweight flywheel with no problems.

Finally jumped on the AP pulley bandwagon?

Figured for a $130 why not ? Even if it only adds 2 hp, like my last set did that still isn't a bad proposition vs. the $350+ my last set cost me.

Yeah, I had no problems with my Prolite Flywheel from ACT. Yes, you do have to adjust a little with a new one. It's really awesome. When you do install one, just watch your rpms the first few miles. Mine dropped to about 500 when I was in a drive-thru right after installing (did it myself with a friends help).

I tihnk you should ask the MAzda dude WHY he says the light flywheel will do "more hrm than good".

It will be interesting if he comes up with something or just goes, "errrr...."

The way he put it, "it messes up 3rd gear, and sometimes causes stalls at stops. After getting conflicting opinions about the flywheel, I don't know what my next mod will be.

DSEA: Run. Run as fast as you can from that dealership. Never take your 8 back there again.

I did the MS flywheel and liked it. It's way too conservative, though. I'd go with the lightest one I could find if I were you. I've never heard anyone complain about the drivability after installing a really light one.

i've been haunting this forum for about a year, and the lwtfw is the one mod that appears to get universal praise. people have been safely putting lightweight flywheels on all rotaries, and any other type of car you care to name w/o problems for years. i have one on my evo (fidanza) w/ zero problems. i would question the competence of that tech...

I received my RB flywheel yesterday but I am still shopping for a Fidanza 2.1 clutch... does anybody know a good Fidanza's distributor?

I will post some feedback as soon as I have 'em installed...

Oh, never mind... I just talked to Fidanza and they have not released their RX-8 2.1 clutch yet...

I've just ordered my ACT prolite flywheel and clutch combo along with a RB exhaust from Rx7 store.com and i can't wait to get it. My experiance with flywheels is both good and bad... i had a Camaro once that i changed the flywheel out on... before i changed it i could easily smoke third gear when shifting hard....after the flywheel the car lost some of it's trans' inertia and it was harder to chirp third. however, the car did accelerate a little quicker and the revs climbed faster. so i don't think any mod you make to the 8 does'nt come with some sort of sacrifice...anyways i'll post a video on Youtube after i install the parts. here is a link to some of my videos on youtube:

had the ACT prolite flywheel and heavy duty clutch installed for 2 months already, the shifting feels smoother and rpm goes up noticeably faster. if you plan to change the flywheel, just be sure to change your clutch too because this way you can save money on labor if you decide to change out your clutch later on.

I've had the ACT HD clutch in for 6 months now & I still think it is too heavy . Given a 2nd chance I'd go for the one Fanman fitted - Centreforce (I think ) which has a lighter pedal than stock .

well the ACT heavy duty clutch is a bit stiffer and the catch point is lower, but the shifting is a lot smoother than stock. well i also have the agency power ss clutch line in the combo with the clutch which assisted the shifting to be a little smoother. i got used to the clutch already, but i remember the first day i got my car with the upgraded clutch.... i died out twice at the spot cause of the low catch point. in my opinion i think it just depends on how you want your car to feel. some people may not like the stiffer clutch pedal because the car is used as a daily driver ( well im a daily driver ) and some people do cause they hunger for performance. well i havent tried a rx8 with a stock clutch since i installed the ACT and the feel of the clutch has grew into me. oooh and also it depends on which clutch disc you have...( that makes a difference with the pedal feel ).

I just had the ACT HD clutch and Streetlite flywheel installed last week. Other than stalling out when I pulled out of the shops lot I adjusted to the new clutch fast. It's not bad at all.

just had my ms flywheel installed today, its good...recomended.. i dont know how it would b for fidnaza or lighter 1s... but i think too light and u might see some tradeoffs... or even loss of torque... i donno... but i think lighter dosnt mean better in this case.

I want the ACT Prolite flywheel, and for only $285 that's a good deal. How much does a shop usually run to install a flywheel? How long does it take to drop the trany in the 8? It's gotta be a 5 hour job, at least?

i have a lighter one.. prolite...

it took about an hour to get used to... and the new clutch needed the pedal height to be adjusted...

i would not go back..

just got my ACT prolite and clutch installed for $230. they work great but unfortunately i can't seem to 'feel' a difference. i noticed the rpm's rise a little quicker from idle. the clutch grabs real soon...took a couple of mins to get used to. instead of grabbing half way out the clutch grabs about 1 inch out from the floor. as of right now im satisfied with the setup... i'll probably enjoy it more when i get supercahrged.
