the OE is 60mm; 2-3/8", so 2.5" is the closest commonly available US size, the ID of a 2.5" 16 ga tube is 2-3/8" so it's an easy fit up
once the main single pipe splits off into dual pipes there's no need to maintain the single pipe sizing, but big pipes & tips are what people base their purchasing decision on so that's the marketing reality

One point to take note is that don't put an open pod intake together with it, in my opinion cause its dam loud...to the point that you have to put your volume up to 12 for it to be bearable cause you feel the drone and sound vibrations right in the car.
It feels like the air intake is right in the cabin but if you are type that likes loud and wanting to catch attention this is the right setup.

Since someone mentioned the Tanabe, how about the JIC with Ti muffler and SS pipe? It's a similar setup compare to the Tanabe and should weight about the same. It think RX7store.com sell it for about $900.

you gotta pay to play, 3" 90 deg elbows in 18 or 20 Ga T304 stainless cost me $114 each now, figure about 3x more for Ti if you can find any that large
it takes two of them just to get around the differential, plus all the bends to get up and out the rear bumper shrounds, plus the straight pipe, the welding, the fabrication time .... and that's if you have all the fabriucation equipment at your disposal

I sent an email to Type One Racing (T1R), which makes a nice unit for the S2000, about a single exit Ti exhaust. This was their reply...
"To be honest with you, making a single Ti for the RX-8 will most likely run about $2000 cad each, with today's exchange rate, it's about $1800 USD each.
We would most likely need at least 20 people that are willing to pre-pay for this and is willing to wait 2-3 months for the first batch.
The cost is considerably high and we will need to find a local car to properly make something like a mold for this.
If we can some how get that many people, I do not see why we can't do this."
So, if anyone is truly interested to get this thing rolling...

damn, its intriguing but it seems a little unreasonable since the JIC dual can be had for $1300. it would seem that it should cost less... i guess price goes up when they're only going to make 20
