Made my first Dyno Run today

Went to the dyno today. Wasn't really expecting anything special.. But I think I got some pretty good numbers. Only engine mods I have are a Borla Exhaust, SR Motorsports Intake, SR flywheel, RB plug wires, Lineage Ground Kit, and a CZ Stage 1.1. First two runs were with the CZ on. 3rd run is with the CZ turned off. Had some issues with detonation with the CZ unit on . I did the dyno test at Turbotrix in Edison, NJ. Unfortunately, their computer didn't want to talk to my thumb drive, so I don't have the graphs saved. I do have a print out of the graphs, so I need to find the digital camera to take a pic of it and post.

All numbers are SAE corrected.

Run 1: 182.0 whp, 130.87 torque **detonated at 8250 RPM**
Run 2: 184.44 whp, 133.66 torque **detonated at 8250 RPM**
Run 3: (CZ Turned off) 177.16 whp, 129.88 torque **no detonation.. whew**

The runs with the CZ were with stock maps for the Stage 1. Now I need to do some serious tuning. That detonation bothered me, but it never happens when I am driving.. only when it's on the dyno..

Luckily, there aren't any problems with the car from the detonation. I used 94oct gas, I guess the CZ was just too lean.
**memo to self: bring more fans to blow on the engine while on the dyno next time**

Those are pretty low numbers for the mods you have on. Is this just another case of dyno gremlins?

not really surprising, if i put mine up on a dyno I probably see similar numbers.

7hp with cz, I was expecting more. With proper tuning I think another 8-10 can be had.

dsc/tc was off right?

Yup, DSC/TC was off during each run...

Oh yeah.. detonation isn't cool.. not sure if I mentioned that earlier.. scared the living hell out of me

They said they could, but to be honest, I don't want them touching my car... some of them seem a bit shady.. besides it's a Mitsu shop, they don't like Mazda's....

My local rotary mechanic has a tuner he uses. The guy comes in every so often and tunes the FD's and FC's who has has put turbos in. He is going to tune the CZ for me next time he comes down.. which should be in the next 2 weeks.

His name is Jim Phillips. He owns a shop called JPR Imports. Great guy, even better mechanic. He only works on 7's and 8's. Here is the address. It's in Blackwood, NJ

409 South Black Horse Pike
Blackwood, NJ 08012
phone: 856-227-1808

If you call him tell him Jon sent you. He has weird hours, normally doesn't open until 10am or so. Hope that helps.

Hey man, I'm blaming the MAF sensor.. that's the reason the 8's have so much difference in power.... or so i've been told.

What was the correction value? Any idea of your 'uncorrected' or 'measured' numbers?

Also - are you worried about the detonation while using the CZ?

Uncorrected the numbers were 7'ish horsepower higher.. been over a week now and I forget the decimals

As far as detonation with the CZ.. I am only worried about that while I'm on the dyno... if you've ever dyno'd before you know that the car isn't moving.. heheh.. so the engine doesn't get cool, intake doesn't take in cooler air, etc.. So I am blaming the detonation late in the RPM band on the increased head of the block in that range.. The CZ doesn't have any problems on the road, but when I'm on the dyno it wants to blow me up .. I need need to actually tune the damn thing instead of using the stock maps.. guess I should get off my lazy butt and do it.. I'm getting 7whp from the stock maps, who knows what I could get if I actually tune it.

You only live about 120 miles away from one of the best tuners in the whole country, Demetrios of Reactive Racing, he is one of about 5 or 6 people in the whole USA that I would trust to tune an ECU on a turbo rotary. He is in Columbia Maryland, phone # 443.745.5911. http://www.reactiveracing.com

Are you sure your engine detonated or that your engine just had high levels of knock? I am interested in finding out how the renesis handles detonation but I haven't heard anything from experienced tuners. Two times I have had engines break because of detonation once while tuning on the dyno and another when it was cold out and the air/fuel ratio leaned out too much and both times it only took one detonation and the motor lost compression. This is why it is difficult for most tuners to tune a rotary because a lot of piston engine tuners tune up to detonation then back it off a little bit.

philodox, do they know the canzoomer works backwards meaning when you add fuel your taking it away and that also goes for the ignition if iam not mistaking.ill be dropping my car off on the 20 of this month there. just wondering what they said ?

I asked them if they had someone there that was an expert in using the Greedy Emanage. They told me yes. I'm just going to assume that since the person there knows emanage, they would also know about what you mentioned.
