manual transmission problems

does anyone who has the 6 speed manual transmission ever had problems with it?

heres my problem...
it doesnt like to go into second gear. if im taking off normally (slow) it will go in just fine but if im taking off fast (racing) then i have to skip second and go to third. also i cant downshift into second either unless im going less than 20 mph. please i hope someone can help with this problem its been getting me really pissed off lately....

The second gear synchro is the culprit. Search the forum for the term "second gear"

In racing the transmission is the weakest link. We have gone through a total of 12 transmissions and we practically plan on breaking one every race. The syncros are part of the problem but we see almost as much problem with the shift forks. We are working on improvements to the components to help make our transmissions last longer. I will let you know what we find out after some testing.
If your warranty is still in effect take it back to the dealer. If not, PM me and we might be able to help you out if you are close by.

the trans may be the weakest link, but ours is a POS

Unless your a top level auto-xer (like team) or a serious racing outfit like ROAR there is no need to pound the car on upshifts and crash your synchros. If you double clutch on the down shifts and rev match (heel toe if your braking) the bad synchro won't make a difference and the shift should be like butter so you might be able to live with it that way until you fix it. There is definatley a weak point on this car with the gear box, it reminds me of Alfas when they used to be imported. The second gear synchro would be gone within a few k of new.

I have the same issue but is only downshifting when b/w 48 and 55. Worn synchro, but since I hardly ever downshift that high I'll leav it for now.

i had to replace the tranny after 32k miles , mainly it f^cked up from missing second gear ( which i always miss it when racing , best solution, dont race your car w/o a short shifter , it helps your tranny last longer

a short shifter doesw not in itslef make your tranny last longer. only YOU can do that. if you feel you HAVE to have a short shofter to keep tranny life to normal, then i question your competence to drive a manual.

I had a transmission failure with my 8" It begun at 10 000 km when my dealer change the trans oil from Motul to a Shell Helix oil and then the 4th gear began scraping when upshifting from 3 to 4th gear, but only when i rew it to 9000 rpm. Then at 30 000 km when i spun the rear tires the tranny began sounding like a crash, wine sound from every gear except 5th. Now my Mazda mechanic has begun tearing the box apart and discover a loose ball from mainshaft bearing. Also 4 gears are vorn. The car has still warranty, but my problem is that Mazda Sweden does not replace the gearbox but shall repair it!This will take a long time probably 3-4 weeks more, so i'm not so happy at the moment. This is my personal reflections what's happened to me and my gearbox.

there's always the possibility of a clutch problem too, possibly the PP bolts coming loose, the disc center starting to get loose or come apart (several massive failures reported here including one of ours last week), the slave cylinder hanging up, or the clutch pedal adjustments out of spec

ARC i had this problem, and the dealer just replaced my second gear.... i don't exactly remember what the dealer said, but i would suggest u go in for a drive with one of the mechanics, and show him, thats what i did, and they replaced it, and now it runs beautifully...good luck

the only time a dealer will not do work on your car due to aftermarket parts is if they can 100% prove that, the problem is being caused by your act clutch or the prolite flywheel, other than that they have to fix it legally...I have mods on my car, and they just do it no questions asked.

last night my car stopped going into any gears....... period...... the car would start to roll ever so slightly forward the more i tried to force it in gear though, but would never go into gear. luckily I was in my neighborhood and pushed it the rest of the way home. Surprisingly when I woke up today every was fine again? Makes no sense to me. I had it towed to the dealer anyway to let them have a look.

dealer took at look at mine today. they say its most likely the clutch master cylinder and are going to replace that. Well see how that goes.

well if the issue is due to the existing shifter and you replace it... I used to have issues where it felt like there was a wall for 2nd gear coming out of 1st and since I installed short shifter I have never had this problem. I guess there is the small chance that it could have been my driving, but the fact that it worked fine after installing the short shifter makes me believe otherwise.

mine is starting to grind at high RPM's when I'm trying to upshift...heck, even when I try and downshift and slightly high RPM's.

think it's the synchro?

try adjusting the clutch pedal first to make sure you're getting the full PP disengagement stroke, might also try bleeding the clutch slave line

I'll look into trying to do that. The catch 22 is that every RX-8 owner whose driven my car LOVES the feel of my clutch...

yeah, i cringe every time it happens. I'll check out that clutch pedal when I get home, see if that or bleeding the lines does anything.

I'm having a different problem I believe. When the tranny is cold (first 5 minutes of driving) 2nd and 3rd go in with a clunking sound. They don't grind just go in and make that damn sound. I found that if I double clutch it shifts fine, once warm I'm free to shift without double clutching. Is this normal? I ask because it just started doing it. I just changed tranny oil to RP for the second time. The first time I changed the oil, nothing changed
