Manual Vs. Auto
So I've been thinking about buying an RX-8 for a very long time now. Probably for about 4 years or so. I'm only 18, going on 19 in January, so clearly I haven't been able to afford such an amazing piece of machinery. But I've been trying to do research on them because if I buy one, I want to make it fast. So my questions to you good people of rx8club.com are:
Can and automatic be as fast or faster than a manual?
Whats the fastest quarter-mile times (without nitrous) have been reached with automatic RX-8's?
Whats the fastest quarter-mile times (without nitrous) have been reached with manual RX-8's?
What is the best year/trim to try to make fastest?
And finally, which do you recommend as being the fastest, manual or automatic? Please explain your reasoning.
I really appreciate anyone's input. I'm a huge enthusiast and as soon as I finish paying off my current car, I'm gonna sell it and use the money to put down on an RX-8.

Naw.... these questions have been asked a million times and all the old farts that come on here will get mad and tear you a new one. "Use the search button" AT is slower stock to the manual... I dunno times.

I didn't mean which is fastest stock, I should've been more specific. I meant which one has the most potential? Can automatics take as much power that a manual can handle?
And this is going to show how car ignorant I am, but what do you mean by 4 port or 6 port?
Edit:
Then I guess my next question would be, which RX-8's are 6 port?

MT is always going to have more potential. Although there are a few turbo'd 4 port AT's around. 06 AT and up have a six speed auto tranny with a 6 port engine. 04 and 05 AT's are 4 port. All MT in the US have 6 port engines. Please search next time, we have too many threads like this already.

Your post indicates you main concern is straight line performance. The RX-8 was not designed to be a 1/4 mile car and making it fast in the 1/4 is expensive and un-reliable. You should really think about what you want out of a car so you are not disappointed. That said The AT RX-8 have an engine that makes less power than an 6-speed. The difference is large on the 04-07, not so much on 08-09. The only way to get an AT or even an 6-speed to compete with cars such as v-8 mustangs is spending about 5-7 grand on turbo / sc which is not an bolt on item on this car. Speed cost money, how fast do you want to go??

I was wanting to know what all it would take to get an RX-8 into the low 12's high 11's. Maybe lower if thats even possible.
I want to be different than Evo's and WRX's. I like the design of those cars, but I love the RX-8.
So basically you're telling me that if I'm looking for a car that can have in the upwards of 450+ horsepower I need to start looking somewhere else?
If it were possible I would like to get an RX-8 up to that type of performance. Money is not an object. I'm not worried about spending thousands on making it quick, I just want to know if it's even possible to get it to be that fast and be a daily driver.
Is it not worth it to make it that fast because I would be replacing tranny's, clutches and parts like mad?

So I would need a new motor to hit over 450? That sucks. I wanted to pretty much do everything I could with how it comes stock without changing motors. I like the renesis motor. Hmm.. that sucks.

In the looks department you have them beat. Also in lower cost auto ins. The RX-8 is also an easier car to drive on a road course. The real smart thing is not to care about how fast the other car can go in a straight line. All that proves is who can spend money better. A 12 sec renesis powered RX-8 is a rare and expensive car.

I have a 4 port AT that is faster then some stock 6 port 6 speeds on the road course and auto crossing, I attribute that to driving skills though. My 4 port also puts out more HP than some NA 6 ports. and it's faster then some. I attribute that to Nitrous and tuning.
Mine is an exception though.

Well, then maybe I'll just try to get a 12sec. renesis when I finally get an RX-8. Thanks for the tips you guys. I'll be sure to get a MT. Any suggestions on trim/year? At least in terms of mod-ability.
