MazdaSpeed CAI

MazdaSpeed CAI
I am fairly new with tuning cars and I searched for this answer but couldn't find it. I am looking at buying an RX-8 and the previous owner installed a mazdaspeed intake. When I went and looked at the car it sounded good when we were driving it but when we stopped an it was idling, it sounded like the intake was whistling. Is this normal for an intake or at least this particular intake?
Thanks, sorry if its a newb question

One where you will have to do plenty of reading and searching then finally decide if you will take the plunge and buy a MS CAI or AEM CAI (as AEM made the MS CAI).
Generally agreed that the stock CAI is very good and there is very little if any HP gain by installing an aftermarket CAI.
Largest difference will be the noise, aftermarket CAI's make a great noise. (well I think so)

You will have to search and determine that for yourself.
As I said there are two camps (maybe three) on this topic and I don't feel like starting a **** storm today .... you are going to have to go and search and read and make your own conclusion. Trust me ... its that fucked up.
Racing Beat offers a nice looking (IMO) aftermarket air box ...

Does Mazda still sell this rebranded AEM intake? I'm actually considering putting it on my future upgrades list, but I would feel more comfortable from a warranty perspective buying it (through my dealer, too) than buying the AEM.

I have a Mazdaspeed Cold Air intake on my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 and also on my 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT. On the turbocharged and direct-injected engine of the Mazdaspeed3 GT the CAI adds almost 30hp at the crank. On my normally aspirated RX8 the CAI can add anywhere from 5hp-13hp,depending on the ambient air temp and the humidity and altitude. The MSCAI and the AEMCAI are the same part. The benefit of the Mazdaspeed CAI is the MSCAI will come with a Mazda warranty and WILL NOT void any Mazda warranty on your RX8. The MSCAI are getting scarce to find these days, the AEM is readily available.
Some here will dismiss CAI ,but THEY DO add safe, modest HP and greater throttle response. The engine will breathe better and you will even get a fraction better fuel economy. They do add a throatier exhaust note too. You will notice the better performance every time you drive the car. I know.I have owned seven rotaries since 1973, stock and modified, normally aspirated and forced induction, street and race rotaries. I know from driving a million rotary miles what makes a difference. It is not like in a turbocharged and direct-injected car, but a CAI is still worth the price in your RX8. The longer CAI like the MSCAI or AEM CAI will always make more horsepower than the shorter Ram Air type which still get their intake air from high up in the hot engine bay, and from behind the radiator which gives off warm air. The MSCAI and AEM position their intakes in front and below the radiator to get the coldest air possible. In an RX8 engine a reduction of each 10 degrees of intake air temp can produce a 1hp increase in power

^ Yeah I guess all those silly dyno results showing they make **** for power are BS right? It's pretty well documented that a CAI doesn't really make any usable wheel horsepower on it's own.

Butt Dyno FTW!! I use the AEM CAI and honestly love it. That being said I feel absolutely no diferance with or with out it. I see no better or worse milage. What I do get is a great sound and a lot more space in my engine bay. If I had a full exhaust done with it things may be dif.

but, gwilliams6 has owned 7 rotaries since 1973! That must mean he's right, right?

Back on topic, my MS intake sounds great, with no over-all change in power OR mpg. I've owned an 8 with an oem intake, as well...

Everyone has opinions but the facts are that when my 8 was stock I could repeatably beat RX-8's at the drag strip with full bolt-ons. I won't name any names but one of them has every MS part available from the intake down to the wheels. That's not to say bolt-ons don't work in terms of gaining HP but I believe the results are the sum of parts and other variables. But if you take two bone stock brand new RX-8's, install the MS/AEM in one and have a professional driver do some 0-100 runs I highly doubt the differences in times will be noticeable.
It has been proven time and time again during several dyno days, just go back and look at the results. Mazda did a great job with the factory intake systems all the way to the engine. Plus, some cars are just stronger than others. Grungepup and I have done many, many 3rd gear pulls over the years and he has almost always beat me, despite the fact that the only mod he has is a midpipe. Although that is a thing of the past

OP, check all of the vacuum lines, and the rubber joints for leaks. Also make sure that the screens are in good shape. They could be causing the whistle.
Other NEWB in the thread.:
A smart man would do his research and find that real dyno's don't lie, while butt dyno's tend to mis-inform. It doesn't matter how many cars you've had, or who made them.
My revi duct turned me into el dorifto.
True story.
