Mazdaspeed Flywheel

Stock flywheel is 21.5lbs
My advise is, if you want a noticable gain in power get a turbo kit. Last year, I bought lightwheel rims, lighter tires, light weight pulleys, intake, racing beat ram air duct. Voltage stabilzer thinking that it would make my RX-8 faster. It did. Maybe by .2 seconds
The improvement was there, but with all the money spent on those items I should of bought the Turbo kit.

I am thinking of getting the pettit racing supercharger when it comes out but usually flywheels are extremly good upgrades. On the mazda mx6 LS the stock is around 25 pounds and a 13 pound flywheel makes a 0-60 difference of about 1 second. Considering the replacement flywheel was a mx3 stock that costs $50 it was probably the best mod for the car.

racing beat web site said stock weight 16.8 lbs, so not much different.

The stock flywheel has a built in counter weight which weighs about ~4.5lbs if I recall.
So if your considering an aftermarket flywheel most of them list the weight of flywheel WITHOUT the counter weight. So most of the time you need to add ~4.5lbs to make a comparison vs. stock.
hope that helps.

the MS flywheel has a lot of material removed from the outer portions which make its rotational inertia the same as RB's... and its rotational inertia that really matters

Exactly - it's not the weight so much as where the weight is placed.
