MS CAI issues/ questions?
Just had the MA CAI installed yesterday and I have a couple questions that I couldn't find answers to through the "search" function.
#1 - I put the "sock" over the cone filter but is it necessary? Is there any restriction becasue of it? I'll probably only get 3hp from it anyway so I want what I can get out of it.
#2 - There is an annoying/ overly obvious high pitched sound coming from it/ the engine compartment. I read that a couple of folks with this intake have experienced it but nothing more was said. I want it to go away. Is there a fix for this noise?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I think the "sock" cuts down on the amount of moisture and larger debris particles that will get sucked into your filter. If you have ever cleaned and re-oiled an aftermarket filter, you will see that you get seeds, pieces of leaves, and other junk in the pleats. Also, if the road is wet, a sock type device will cut the amount of water hitting the filter. It should be breathable enough to not disturb the intake flow much.
As for noise, what is making the noise? Can you identify where it is coming from if you have the hood popped and you have someone work the throttle? I haven't seen an MS intake upfront. Most aftermarket intakes will make more noise than stock. They aren't usually in the "squeal" family, but maybe.

I should have mentioned that it does seem to be working fine. My drive home from the shop was fun and spirited but when I got home to show my wife she immediately asked what that whistling was and I agreed with her that it was bad.
The high pitched noise is similar to a teapot when it's whistling. To me it takes away from the natural sound of the rotary engine and is annoying.
Anyone else with experience?

Hi,
first sorry for my bad English I have the same problem with whistle since a few month. Sometimes it is extremely loud It can unfortunately be difficult to locate where it comes from. I have the CAI already 2x dismantled and assembled again. But unfortunately no improvement.
Here are two Vids from my RX8

I used to have the AEM intake and I never heard it whistle!
Funny thing is when I was playing that video, my wife asked if I was watching a video of someone vacuuming
Only one thing I can think of, pull the cap for the VFAD nipple that is behind the throttle body and see if its cracked.
If it is, go to Autozone and replace it.
You can buy a pack of various sizes for a few dollars.

i have checked the VFAD cap but its ok when i pull the highest under-pressure hose is the whistle louder. The Whistle appears directly from the hose to come. When i put my finger on this hose then the wistle is away.

Oh... because in your video I didn't see a clamp.
Attachment 137310
You must have installed the clamps after you took this video?

I just installed my aem cai which i believe is almost identical to the ms cai. it does make the buzz, whisttle noise you describe, but heck its hot... isnt that why you installed it, to make your engine louder? if not put the stock back on, and let ur ears rest... i know im leaving mine on!

I tried to buy a sock separate and could not find one. I bought a pre filter (K&N) instead (for the colorado winters).

I can't remeber exactly what model it was that I ordered, but it fits perfect. G/L
