Alright, I've jumped on the LS2 coil bandwagon. They work, and they work very well. Juan braved a ride across the state while jamming to the sound of his Hayabusa and the deathbeats of the lovebugs crashing against his helmet to prove it to me. Thanks again, man.

I'll post some pictures in the morning.

Needless to say hitting a dragonfly at 160+, felt like I was hit with a paintball gun at close range. Thank goodness it hit my leg and not my helmet/throat.

Enjoy the coils and everyones else that wanna give it a try can count on my support.

Sorry........I did get the call that Bastage made about 10:30am, but I didn't see it until almost 3:00pm. I couldn't have provided any real assistance or whatever with this f'ed up broken foot. I guess I could've help consume a few beers, but that's all I need......to be unstable on crutches.
Sounds like you guys got it all in and he's happy............so Good Job to both. Maybe I'll be better for next time. I figure it won't be long before "G" puts in a few items from BHR. Me as well...........might ssee if you feel like doing a clutch/flywheel.

Oh yeah.........."Bastage"..............pics or it didn't happen...........I need something to pass the time!

Just curious, the LS2 coil is a D851 and hence the ignition side connector is refered to as a D851 connector. Is the RX-8 ignition side connector common? is it called anything in particular?

Cheers

GM LS2 coils:

AC DELCO# D514A - GM# 12573190 LS2 coils without a heat sink
AC DELCO# D585 - GM# 10457730 LS2 coils with a heat sink

D581 is the number for the connector given by robligstores http://roblinstores.com/cables/index...&products_id=6

Regardless, you will have to cut out the OEM coil connectors (preferred) or splice the D581 connector pigtails into the OEM coil connector wires. Unless you can find and make a D581 connector to a (female type) OEM coil connector harness.

Perhaps some one else can provide information on where to find or purchase the (female type) OEM coil connectors.

Read an article yesterday where they refered to the coils themselves as D581, D585, etc hence I mentioned that.

What I was getting at was what you mentioned, looking to see if you can get a male connector as is on the OEM coil, but not knowing it's common name (if it has one) makes it hard to search.

I will head into one of the local places tomorrow and see if they know.

Cheers

This is how I made use of burned out coils, to make a plug & play adapter:

For the coil plug connectors, I soldered the female bullet connectors to the socket terminal. Now I got myself a set of dual OEM/LS2 plug DIY wires.

Best of both world

Btw, thanks to this thread, I save myself from buying a new set of OEM coil.

Yes they are the D585 GM# 10457730

You can get them on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-G...spagenameZWD1V

or the GM LS2 without the heat sink http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-I...3286.m20.l1116

Try searching for the connectors at http://connectors2.delphi.com/dcsgdmcs/homepage.aspx

Nice job!

I wonder how many more LS2/MSD setups are out there and how come people keep spending hundred of dollars on other aftermarket ignition upgrades when you can do this by yourself for less than $150 if using the GM LS2 coils.

Went to an autocross event yesterday and the car did really well. The course was really fast (I got to redline-second twice and even shifted to third once). The car behaved awesomely. My driving has actually improved quite a bit too. Loving the coils.

Thanks, I have seen them around (wish I could find MSD's at the price you got ), just curious if they were the 585 as I am curious if the heatsink provided any benefit, where he had mounted them, etc.

Also thanks for the link to the delphi site, looking promising

Charles, if you can get access to these connectors now I will happily pay you (a reasonable amount ) to save me running around after them.

Cheers

1) The connectors that are needed to build your own harnesses, all 8, for $60, shipped.
2) The 4 harnesses pre-built for $100. I can also special-order custom lengths(at a slight premium) for the relocated coils applications.
3) The BHR coil set w/GM Yukon coils for $375, shipped. This will include the bracket and plug wires. Add $60 for a new set of factory plugs in the deal.
4) The BHR coil set w/MSD #8247 coils for $575, shipped. This will also include the bracket, wires, and $60 offer for the factory 7s and 9s plugs.

I will start to develop a pre-order list which will help me to know where I need to send stuff when it all comes in. I will take NO MONEY at this time, just names and orders via PM.
well done Charles!

on a separate note has there been any conclusive proof these coils stop spark blow out with high hp (300+)?

Yeah, goog job Charles on kitting this. I am happy when usefull mods come out for the RX-8 like this... the "reliability" with improvement mods that the RX-7's live and die by.

Charles is playing coy. Jeff's car has gone much higher than the spark blow out point on the OEMs. There's maybe a dozen RX-8's that are capable of reaching those numbers right now.

lol.

the answer to that is "more than you can afford, buddy. Ferrari"

the problem with saying 300 whp is that the oem coils can do more than that, so you are downplaying any advantage of the new hardware.

I'm not sure if this a good comparison but a friend of mine installed the MSDs on his EVO after I showed him my setup. He is now making 475 whp on 93 octane and 525 whp on racing fuel. Those whp figures came from a Mustang Dyno. Therefore, 28 pounds of boost and 475/525 whp might suggest that spark blow out could be very unlikely on a FI 300+ rotary engine.

Also, I used to get a random misfire CEL code after a few WOT runs soon after my meth kit install. However, it is no longer the case after my MSD ignition upgrade.

it seems MM and scott are the only ones who have substantially exceeded 300+hp anyway. if these coils help the other tuners hit over 300+ then I'm happy

everyone was complaining about the std earth points and wire gauges. can the std setup cope with msd coils?

BTW:

I drove to Orlando and back on Tuesday (was only dropping someone off). Cruising at 75-80 with the occasional WOT to get up to speed/pass, mostly highway. I still have 1/3 tank left and I'm at 175 miles. Best tank I've had in a long time. I'm guessing 23 mpg.
