the injen is a POS. They have a tube on the inside that is designed to try and 'trick' the MAF.

If you must get an intake: AEM, RB, or MS are probably the best built and most likely to produce incrased airflow and maybe even a few ponies

Cool MAZDASPEED intake

Has anybody used the MAZDASPEED cold air intake? I read that you get about 10-12 extra ponies.

there are really only 2 options

a short ram + rb duct
sr motorsports + rb duct
revi + rb duct
custom + rb duct
k&n drop in + rb duct

and the AEM/Mazdaspeed intake.

I lol'd

you are better off taking a dump to lose a few pounds to make your car go faster than install an aftermarket intake.

altho if bling is your thing, than by all means.

if i were to get the AEM, i'd definitely get it in red. you can still find them on the net. tirerack has a bunch of different colors stocked.

LOL. Injen rox0rs.

The Injen is a POS. It really screws up the MAF.

I don't want to spoil anything, but the hypothesis we have is that the stock intake is more than capable of flowing enough air to meet the performance needs of an N/A motor.

There are slight improvements you might be able to make with drop in filters, but we're hoping to assemble various different intakes and test their flow rates and overall effects on an otherwise stock car.

I can't totally trash talk intakes cause I have an AEM on my own car. My only excuse is I threw my stock intake in the trash a long time ago!

I had the K&N version 2. All that thing did was make lots of noise and suck in hot engine air. Intake air temps @ 150 degrees were not uncommon. The AEM gave near ambient temps and also retained the stock intake tube diameter so it was an easy sell for me.

Basicly it's kinda like this:

Aftermarket does not always mean better than factory
Noise doesn't always mean more power
Bigger intake tubes don't always mean more airflow

If you're buying an intake from a vendor, be sure to ask if that intake flows better or worse than stock. Ask them if it provides lower ambient temperatures and whether or not it will cause Mass airflow sensor calibration issues. If they can't tell you then I'd shop elsewhere.

I knew intakes (and for the most part bolt-ons) were a waste the first time I raced a RX-8 several times at the track that had the MS intake, flywheel, and catback and beat him everytime. Since then I have beaten many "modded" RX-8's. This car is not a drag car but it would be nice if it came with a resonated catless midpipe, BHR radiator, BHR Ignition, BHR flywheel, MM AP, HKS single side catback, haha.

the stock intake is so heavy.

i was surprised. i didnt think plastic would weigh that much.

btw, k&n dropin will flow more than the stock filter. whether it flows enough to see reasonable gains is another question..

Hi, I just got my rx8 and I added a 3 inch spectre MAF adapter pipe to the stock rubber tube (i used a rubber ring from one of their 1 cone-fits-all filters to make a good seal between the 2)and used a 3 inch k&n cone filter. The sound is amazing but to be honest the car runs pretty crappy at times especially at the lower rpms even gave me a CEL. The reason i've kept it this long is mostly because of the amazing sound when the aux intake ports open at 4,000 ish rpm (sounds like VTEC/ VVT-li)...also because this setup weighs a fraction of the airbox's weight and i am a firm believer of weight reduction

What drop in filters are available other than K@N? I want something JDM

I can back that up as well. I had the K&N on my RX8 for about 40,000 miles.

I saw intake air temps as high as 188 degrees during the Phoenix summers.

I just purchased the WeaponR Secret Intake from http://www.erzperformance.com/product_p/secret168.htm It was a good price and it came with free shipping, free filter cleaner and a free ram air kit. I will be installing it as soon as it arrives. Not expecting too much out of it. Will post pics and maybe a video after installation.

omg weapon r. fail.

those things lose hp.

here is what you need to do.

get the racing beat duct.
and get some insulated HVAC ducting from home depot and cover that intake so hot air from the engine bay does not go in it.
seal both ends of the HVAC ducting to fully enclose the intake. leaving the only opening where the racing beat duct brings in the air.

Unless he wants to loose 10 hp!

Mu ha ha............

The only way to go is RB, but you won't get much noise.

The AEM is ok but only gives you gains at 8k RPM.

The RB will give you about 3.5hp over the range and 7 peak.

Marketing does wonders for useless products. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't charge and arm and a leg for them. This is not a RX8 only problem. My friends EVO actually lost HP on the dyno after paying for a crap intake.
