new 8 owner here -

I have read back several months and cannot find anything about oil consumption. My oil level light activated, and of course I added the oil, but what I am curious about is the level of consumption to expect over the life of the car. I read in one of the manuals that the car would consume oil but it never mentioned how much...

Congrats on the purchase! Welcome to the RX8Club.

Im not sure on what the manual states regarding the volume of oil, but I add ~1 quart every 3000 miles.

I believe it can very as well due to the RX-8's oil metering pump, which adds(?) more oil when the engine is at higher rpms.

In the manual it also states to check your oil during every fill up or two, and gives instructions on how to do so. Don't rely on the oil level light to tell you when to add oil, check regularly. You may have done some damage to your engine.

Also, the oil level indicator is just a DUMMY gauge. IOW, it always reads halfway unless you have no oil - don't rely on it. Check regularly until you get an idea of your average consumption. Then check regularly. :D

*EDIT Oh yeah, I forgot to welcome you to the cul..umm club. Yeah, club. :o *

My old '89 Rx-7 went through a quart in about 1500 mi. I'm a new 8 owner as well. I spoke to an independent rotary specialy shop on Tuesday, and the shop owner said to expect the 8 to be about the same - about 1500 mi. Of course, consumption can vary, as Cam said. So, it's probably best to check the oil at every other gas fill up - every 400-500 miles.

thanks - purchased the car with less than 50 miles, about a month ago. Now have 1650 miles on it. Over the weekend on road trip the light came on and I had to add about a quart and a half. I suspect this is probably because the car is new and everything is getting broken in??

I have been checking about every other day and had planned to check every other fill up as you suggested. Now that I know what to expect..... I tried right after I bought on this website to find something about oil consumption but there was nothing posted...

I have to admit, after the 600 mile mark I really started driving it like it was designed to be driven so I may have added to the oil consumption a little....

Trying to search for something as common as "oil consumption" would probably yield a HUGE list of results.

Try and search, but if you cant find what youre looking for just post a question. There are a lot of friendly, helpful members who will answer.

Woah buddy...you guys who are waiting on the light are scaring me. I have 23,000miles on mine and I have to put ~1 quart every 3000 miles, but I got a little flip booklet (quick guide) that said to check the oil every other fill-up. I am a girl, so of course this does not bother me (cause it kinda makes me look cool to know what I am doing under the hood of my car :D ). I would recommend that you check it fairly often at first, at least until you get a feel of how much it consumes. Don't depend on the light. I watched my oil level just to see when the light would come on. It got all the way down to the low line and the light still had not come on. I think that when the light actually comes on, you are WAY too low to be driving this car without damage to the engine.
