New short ram intake comments

So after seeing the outrageous prices for rx8 parts from filter to intake systems. I spotted this short ram intake system on E bay. I will say i was pretty skeptical at first but it worked out great. First of it sounds great, a little on the loud side. The Quality of the piping is pretty good and comes with a heat block off plate. It fits fine with a little work on how you set the clamps. Now i know everyone says intakes do much for the rx8 with out FI, but im pretty impressed. Maybe my car was running pretty crappy but now it chirps into second on call and i don't have that low-rpm hesitation. For a little $100 it was well worth it. Oh and no idle issues or check engine lights

It wont pull much hot air, yes its wide open on top, but when the car moves. theres almost no way that it can suck alot of hot air.

That is K&N Version 1.

As some of the ppl might know, I had it, but I sold it off like almost right away (2-3 months? as soon as version II came out)

this setup was a rush-to-market design. They thought that it *will* work, but nope. not so good

When you take your stock intake box out, there 2 little mesh in between the box and tube. try to take one out and see if u can stick it into your setup. Or else your engine might just stall on you one day on highway speed. (happened to me a few times when I had the version I, scared the **** outa me)

I'm not too sure how this increases performance besides a less restrictive filter. I think the hot air would negate the effect of any benefit the extra flow.

i understand its bringing in hot air. but so does the stock intake. Sure the stock box pulls cool air from the front but what ive noticed is that the stock piping gets extremely hot anyways warming up that cool air, right?

thermal conductivity of that metal pipe is far greater than the plastic airbox.

didnt think of it that way. Whats the aem piping made out and how much more heat would this metal piping actually make over plastic

Just put a RB ram on it when you got the money you'll be fine.

just wait till your going down the highway, clutch in and the car dies just like the K&N typhoon type I. Hot air = bad

the magic is the mesh that came with stock intake. Thats why K&N wants u to keep it and put it to your Version II.

but I really suggest you to try to get rid of this setup.

K&N changed their design completely in Version II just because they want to suck air directly @ the front, not all over the place expect the front like Version I. (cool air comes from the front hole anyway, why bother sucking air all over instead of the front?)

I have no concern about the hot air at all. as the car moves hot air will move to the back of the engine bay and get out of the car.

Hasn't happened yet and ive been on the highway with this with the clutch down in gear and cruising in neutral.

Yea either i plan to get a respected intake or get the rb duct, is the rb duct really helping?

the rb duct will help but I would suggest buying some piping and rounting the filter to outside the engine bay. That way you kind of kill 2 birds with 1 stone. That's my plan with the typhoon type I. Might as well do somethign with it since it's been sitting in a box for over a year now.

Either im blind or i cant seem to find/ identify that mesh from the stock intake. Yea im plaing as my next project to route the filter outside of the engine bay. There was a great DIY custom made intake thread where he had tried a few setups cant seem to find it.

If you are talking about me here ya go.....

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-aftermarket-performance-modifications-23/custom-cai-wish-me-luck-103093/

I have made yet another change to my intake. It is my version of AEM's V2 intake that they sell for hondas, toyotas, etc. I used a 4" aluminum straight pipe up top (about 11" long), a 3.5" aluminum elbow to pass thru the radiator support and a 3.5" rubber elbow coupler at the end of 3.5" aluminum pipe to level out the filter across the front of the car. I had to add a short piece of aluminum pipe between the rubber elbow and filter to be able to connect the filter. I did this cause the filter on my original setup faced straight down and may have been the reason I had a little water in my intake pipe after driving in heavy rain. The filter was about 2 - 3" above the plastic under shield and may have picked up water from the shield. With my new set up the filter is about 6-7" above the shield.

I got the two 4" - 3.5" couplers from PEP BOYS for about $28. The 3.5" elbow coupler off ebay for $25 shipped and the filter from AEM's sale on ebay last week for $30 shipped. AEM was having a closeout sale on their 9" x 5" filters with a 3.5" inlet. I like this setup much better over any that I have done so far. I get more of the rotary sound than the "I have an intake" sound at WOT. When I was making this intake setup I thought going from a 3.5" to 4" then back to a 3.5" pipe at the MAF sensor would be louder due to the bottleneck. I was surprised that the 3.5" setup I had was louder than this one.

yueap that the thread i was talking about. Too bad i saw it after i spent my money on the intake i have. Im pretty sure im going to try something like what you have in a few weeks. Now i know you stated the piping stayed cold but tht was like 50 degrees weather. Is it getting hot now?

It gets warm but is much cooler than under the hood. I am really pleased with my setup. It would be easy to convert your setup. I thought about running my pipe all the way up to the throttle body but it gets really hot over the engine. I didn't want the added heat from the aluminum pipe adding to the mix. I'm sure there's not a major temp difference between the stock pipe and aluminum but if the stock pipe is 10 degrees cooler that usually equals 1hp. Hit me up if you need some pointers when you start your project.
