Would this be considered an upgrade or a downgrade?

This would actually be great for weight savings. We do not have a true dual exhaust. It's just aesthetic.

Alex I truly hope you either mean that as a joke or that you are aware that it is weight savings over many items that helps and not just this. This argument has been beaten to death by the 2nd gen RX-7 guys. They actually believe that the lack of weight from 1 muffler is noticable enough to make you faster. Um, no. Some of them also say that this must flow better since there is no turbulence from a Y junction. Again, no. This is really only an aesthetics mod. There is absolutely no performance potential to be had from it. Just as with the 2nd gen RX-7, the RX-8 has the cutouts for 2 mufflers. If it is missing one, it looks like it is actually "missing" something. It looks wrong. That's just my opinion of course.

Someone posted a pic of one that had done that. It didn't look near as cool as I thought it would. I actually thought it looked cheesy.

Does it reduce enough weight to make a performance difference in certain types of racing, no. If a one pound weight on a ten foot pole creates 10 pounds of torque at it's fulcrum, can you believe it is possible that weight at a distance from the center of gravity be exponential and have some effect on weight transfer in transitions, maybe.

weight is weight, and less of it is better IMO

I know what you are getting at but this little amount of weight is still irrelevant. Yes, the farther out it is, the more of a difference it makes from a leverage standpoint. So you are saying you would rahter have all of your muffler weight on the left side of the car only rather than 8 more pounds but balanced out evenly? Also remember that when you turn, your car isn't turning on a pivot as on a rotating stand. It is moving forward as well. This applies more in a 2 dimensional world than a 3 dimensional one. Yes all weight still makes a difference for performance but this won't affect you at all. Yes the less of it the better. Just don't expect this to do anything to help you performance wise. It won't.

^I agree.... if you're gonna do a single tip only, it might as well be centred.

What ifyou made the center tip shaped like a rotor sothat it would look almost like the rotor accent?

The car in the picture is most probably a RHD and it makes sense for it to be on the left to balance out the driver. Had I designed the exhaust it would come out on the right.

Also, I'm not too sure about losing just 8 pounds... Have you weighed the cans on the RB, GReddy, HKS

btw: I lost a trophy spot by less than 1/10th of a second today. Will the difference make leaps and bounds of a difference, no. But I might be polishing a new trophy tonight had I picked up a couple of 1/100th of a second

All I'm saying is had a one sided exhaust (for a LHD car) been on the market, I would have chosen it over the quasi dual exhaust I have now and it would have been for weight savings no matter how slim the pickins :D

Essential Speed had a single exhaust unit in RX Tuner magazine as well. Claimed the stock unit was 41 lbs., and there was 11 lbs. Nice 30 lb. saving, but personally I like the dual exhaust look, over saving 30 lbs.

i forgot where i read it before.... but the main reason for switching to a single exaust system from a dual setup is not to save weight..... well of course there will be some weight savings....but the main thing was something about the back pressure of the single exaust system in opposed to a dual setup.... it also had dyno runs from a S2000 and saying that all the single exaust systems gets more HP than any dual exaust system....

Just put on my Greddy last week.

Greddy + Pipe => 34 Lbs.

OEM + Pipe => 35 Lbs.

I'd hit it.

Really all that would be needed to put this on the right side is cut off the hangers it comes with and re-weld some hangers in proper place... really simple job.

Off to find someone that can get me a price, and see if they can order it.

No thanks. THe RMagic cans WOULDN'T sound good. They are one of the loudest cans you can get for the 8 (JDM). From the pics I've seen of the 2 can setup, it looks cheap with the Ti tips (only) riveted onto the rest of the pipe. You can keep it!

Rotary Run Racing makes a single can/exit full Ti muffler that weights almost nothing. Not cheap either. I had posted stuff on it months ago. This all old news...

Got a link? For reference, I could care less on how it sounds (as long as it's under a certain dB at x feet). I care about weight vs cost for the unit. Having a cheap exhaust is fine with me since it's not a daily driver, and is sheltered most of the cars life.
