where do i begin? my wife suckered me into getting a automatic (stupid!) so is there something that will get me in the direction of getting some of the missing power back?

I don't think there is going to be much you can do to make your auto function like the 6MT. On the good side, due to your auto's gearing, you'll have similar acceleration as the manual.
The fact that my wife can't drive stick was a big reason is making sure I bought a 6MT

you're smart about getting the stick! as far as acceleration goes, i could spin my tires if i was going uphill in a thunderstorm!
how about a k&n typhoon. heard any problems?

I haven't yet seen any reason to replace the intake.
If you have the stock exhaust and want more sound, I suppose the K&N might be one route to take. A lot of people have had issues with it, and many are selling them off. So you may be able to get a used one for cheap.

While I haven't driven the AT before, I don't really see any reason for you to be worrying about it... it's sill an RX-8, and it still rides and corners like the MT. So what if you can't chirp your wheels - I don't don't do it either, not good for the tranny.
Almost all the mods for the RX-8 right now will show barely any changes in power. Suspension is about all that is worthwhile unless you're going for looks/sound.

I would stay away from the K&N air intake, have read few good reviews and a lot of bad ones. The only intake that has gotten consistent good reviews is the RE intake. Just my 2 cents. Basically no real HP gains in any of them, just sound. Each to his own. Good luck with the mods. I suggest the strakes.

I got a a/t rx8 with kn intake and borla exhaust. I can feel a slight difference in power but not to much. You can feel a tad bit in power, but the sound is just amazing =)
