Is an oil catch can really just engine dressing?

Link to GReddy cans is here

Just wondering what some of the engine smart guys out there have to say about this one. On a side note, are the hoses this thing would tap into on the -8 9mm or 15mm or something else?

I know a Catch Can is really useful with certain cars, especially modified ones, with lots of oil bypass. The bypass oil gets catched in the can, rather than getting sucked back into the engine through the intake. I'm not sure if a catch can is really necessary with Rotary engines.

Yes, it is very helpfull in race applications. For you, it would be useless.

It is also useful in a boosted motor because the usual crankase vent would be subject to pressure otherwise (not a good thing - think oil spray everywhere).

Handy in a high hp application.... forget it if your 8's stock.... get it if you plan on turboing your car.

Yea and I think all NOPI cars have to have one. Or if you plan on running you car at a NOPI event you need one.

The "crankcase" ventilation system on a rotary is actually 2 vents. One goes back through a couple of valves into your intake and the other goes to a charcoal canister. Luckily we don't have the turbulence that a piston motor has since their crankshafts are in this chamber. We still do get some bypass though. You don't need a catch can but you can use one if you'd like to. It doesn't matter. I only use them on engines that have no emissions systems.

One goes straight from the filler neck to the intake hose. Pretty messy.

Now, put boost in that hose and watch what happens. Under-hood mud-fountain.

Even though people say there is no significant blowby in a naturally aspirated rotary, I'd still get oil in the intake manifold of my RX-7. Sounds weird but it happens.

So, is that where the catch can would go in the -8?

Yeah you can put it there. Just plug the hole going to the manifold.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life to ask a couple questions...

1. Just purchased a Cusco Oil catch tank and the install instructions are all in Japanese. It doesnt look that complicated to install, but any advice would be appreciated (especially pertaining to minimal mess).

2. I fully intend to purchase FI when it becomes available, and from this thread I am making the assumption that a catch-can is a nice feature to have with that sort of setup. Should I expect anything bad from installing a catch can on an NA 8?

Interesting thread.... Well, after I had to clean 200 mL of oil from the air box and intake, I got a catch can installed. And, I have the NA low power engine (4AT). So I would say it can be usefull unless you enjoy (i) cleaning oil from all the air intake components, and (ii) suddenly loosing power while driving on the highway (hit the brakes, maybe the truck speeding behind you will avoid you when suddenly slowing without any warning....)
Oh, if you think it cannot happen to you, get this: the dealership tech called Mazda USA techline, then assured me it is NORMAL.
Go figure........
And I have a question too: there are 3 small hoses coming from the engine into the air intake. Anybody knows on which one oil can shoot back? I don't think it is the oil filler neck one - I mounted the trap on the one coming from the lowest point of the engine... and of course the oil shooting did not occur again/yet :o)
