Opinions on best intake
I am a new RX 8 owner. 2005 Grand Touring, Velocity Red. I was wondering if some of you could give me some feed back on the best intake I could get for my car. I have read a lot of info on here and other web sites...just thought I might get some opinions as to what you guys would recommend and how well the aftermarket CAI's you guys have are working.

No offense bud... but if you did a lot of reading here, you would already know the answer.
Not much to gain with an aftermarket intake... Mazda did a great job on it.
The two favorites appear to be AEM and Racing Beat with the Revi duct (or stock intake box with the RB Revi duct).
I've had both and probably prefer the AEM, plus its less expensive.
But don't expect huge/noticeable performance gains from any of these.

Thanks...I basically wanted to get some different opinions from some different people. Trying to get more familiar with the 8. I've tuned Honda's and Mitsubishi's for quite sometime...I figured I would try something different this time! I appreciate your response!

When the aftermarket intake (like AEM) is combined with a mid-pipe, cat-back, and the Cobb AccessPort for tuning... THEN you will notice a little performance gain (and I do mean little).
But other than that, the aftermarket intake will just make the car sound louder and look better under the hood.

They don't advertise "peak" power gains, just the largest gains somewhere in the power band.
The K&N's short ram design sucks in hot engine air. Combined with the PCM's ability to defeat the MAF sensor fooling you spend $250 - $300 on a noise maker that makes your car run like crap.
AEM and Racing beat utilize the same size MAF tubing, pull air from outside the engine bay and don't cause any engine issues.
However, the stock intake is more than capable of flowing all the air you need. Save your money and buy something worthwhile.

HAHAHAHA nice. Just didn't see the point of spending $300+ on something that wasn't going to help a stock 8. I got the RB Duct used for like $80 I think. I figured ram air from across the entire mouth would provide much needed cooler air. I mainly did this to provide the engine with some better cooling if that makes sense. IDK if it has just been really cold in New England or if the RB Duct is cooling my engine more because my heat isn't getting as hot. Before I actually had to turn temp **** down about half. If I didn't, the interior of my car would be an oven. I mean unbearable. Now, it's comfortable all the way in the red.

Your telling me. I didn't move my car for 3-4 days and then I went to drive it last weekend and it was not happy. It took slightly longer then normal to start and had rough idle for a few minutes. It was like a big FU from my car lol.

I use the K&N typhoon intake it has a very agressive sound. K&N is known throughout the industry for there air filters and intakles unlike companies such as Racing Beat. It is seperated from the engine by the insulated partition that comes with the kit. I wouldn't call it a hot air intake it is still drawing air from the same location as the stock intake. Why don't you all put that haterade down. To each their own. I definately didn't recognize any loss in power. However I would agree it is pretty much an expensive noise maker.

Very thin aluminum heat shield does not seal over the top and does not work for longer drives allowing hot air to be sucked in. Short ram intakes, unless enclosed, will suck in a lot of hot air. Even enclosed intakes will get some warm air.

Hey so far ive tried the AEM, Hks suction, racing beat, k&n, stock box wout baffles, and injen. Damn near every intake for the 8. I think the best setup is racing beat with the duct, hands down. Good airflow and a noticable growl. If you just want it loud try any of the other options... But def at least invest in the rb duct
^k&n absolutely drawn in hot air, its an open air filter protected on one side by a heat shield. If you have a duct forcing cold air into that space thats a different story, but you cant say a short intake like that pulls in cooler air than stock
