I found a performance chip on ebay for about $16. It says it gains up to 40hp and 8-10 more mpg. I wanted some peoples takes on what they think of this performance chip.

It doesn't work. It's just a resistor to fool a sensor along the intake path, sending false data back to the PCM.

Cheapest method of gain via software is Racing Beat's flash for about $300.

well ill let you know tomorrow, I get my ecu back tomorrow with the flash on it. I'll let you know what I think about it, it's the street flash.

scratch that, racing beat JUST called me to tell me despite the fact my package was overnighted friday, it got there on time but they didn't have time to do it. So hopefully I will have it back on weds. I'm pissed.

 

You should read around here. You just asked about a turbo, which is a big step from this. There is a ton of information on these forums, search your topics of interest, narrow down your goals & budget, and go from there.

From what I've read, yes, people are generally happy with Racing Beat's flash. You gain alot of HP/$ compared to other N/A modifications. You do however have to mail your PCM to them to have it flashed unless you live nearby. This means not having use of your car for however long that takes.

Don't ya think if it were that SImple that Mazda would have just put hte $16 chip in the car? With all fo the money they invested into this car, I'd think they wouldn't miss something that would put the car squarely ahead of all competing cars for under $20.

Since the RX-8 is basically unchanged since 2003 yes, every question about this car has been asked in way or another. The low volume of them on the road also limits the amount of aftermarket parts we can talk about also. So until Mazda makes a major change on this car about the only thing that will happen to spice things up will be when more 04's get out of warranty and their owners get creative. In regards to the Ebay chips expecting some common sense is not alot to ask. If you ask about paying $16.00 for a .05 cent resistor to get 40HP you deserve any flames you might receive.
