the backpipe it the pipe that leaves the cat and goes back...
it seems most aftermarket exhausts are 2.5 inches...
i can vouch for the corksport is 2.5" as is the mazspeed dual can....
the other thing i noticed is the stock muffler is almost 3" the borla is the same... and guess what the turbo xps or whatever it is that had all the hp gains is 3"...
funny, go figure..
btw... the gasket between the stock header and whatever you hook it up to is ~ 2.75".
think about it for a while..

i am just answering ?s..
nothing is aimed at you... you asked a good ?
so here you go..
the back pipe on the stock exhaust is ~3".
the exhaust gasket between the header and the cat is 2.75".
the borla and everything else is a cat back. has nothing to do with the header / cat connection..
most of the catbacks are 2.5"
if that is not clear enough pm me..

ok, now what about the cat? a buddy of mine says we can pick a 3" magnaflow for like 80 bucks.. how shitty is the stock cat? and is it worth the price?
sorry for the thread jacking, and for the bombarding of questions.. its my first mod for my car, and im really excitied about putting on my borla.. it hasnt been shipped yet.. its been two weeks from rx7store.net and it hasnt been shipped, but im not complaning, my next is the Revi intake with the ramair duct, The AFE Short throw Shifter, maybe an underdriven pully but the mazdaspeed flywheel after, adn ther headers when they are released
