Quietest Catback?

Hello! I'm in the market for a catback, but as this is my daily driver I don't want to get something that's loud. I've read about the B&B, Greddy, Borla, etc. What do people generally consider the best tradeoff between sound and performance?

Thanks!

I would consider the Borla to be quiet, and a nice deep tone.

....she's also got nice big tips!!11!

I've heard that the Mazdaspeed one is relatively loud, where as the Racing Beat one is a little quieter.

From their site
"Just what is “unacceptable”? We assume that an individual that has purchased a RX-8 is seeking an exhaust note that reflects the character of both the car and the maturity of the car owner. The exhaust note that we envision for this car should provide a modest sound level increase over stock, but any harsh or “tinny” tones should be suppressed. Cruising speeds should not produce any droning or buzzing tones, but provide a deep melodic tone that doesn’t distract from the driving experience. But, jump on the throttle and the exhaust should come alive with an aggressive note that enhances the driving experience. Refined and modest while cruising; aggressive and authoritative under acceleration - that is the balance that we strived to achieve! "

I'm sure someone here will chime in that you should have searched for this topic but don't worry, I'll cut ya some slack. (there are quite a lot of threads on this subject though)

Many people here have the Racing Beat exhaust on their daily drivers because it seems to be one of the quietest out there. At idle, you can hardly tell there's an aftermarket exhaust on the car. During normal driving, it's pretty quiet but under wide open throttle, you can tell the difference. It doesn't drone very much nor is it too high pitched.... a GREAT exhaust (IMO)

I have heard all but the B&B & Helix in person, and the RB is the quietest one I have heard, except for stock of course. The MS unit is actually one of the louder options IMO.

The JIC Ti that we put on DKNV's RX-8 is barely louder than OE; very light but also very expensive

The stock catback is quiet. And already paid for. It also performs very well. I would look other places for "bang for the buck" first like the cat. converter.

I agree, unless you want sound just keep the stock muffler.

If you really want to spend the money then get the Racing Beat Rev8. You won't get any significant performance gain but the car will sound better without being louder.

Cool Criteria....

Given that your single criterion is "quietest" -

and given that none of the catbacks offer any performance at all -

then logic dictates you stay with "stock", because it is hands down, the quietest.

+1

they offer very little just by themselves with nothing else added, and all of them are going to be noisier just due to more flow/bigger tubing etc.

My understanding that for sound (Db), weight, performance (big ? for catbacks), pipe size before the muffler, and size of the tips that the Greddy was the best (for stainless steel or titanium tip only). I did not get into titanium exhausts because of the costs, but you would definitely get a weight savings. This is based on my own research and magazines on the RX-8 (including those in Japan).

I think highly of my R-magic exhaust (whose specs are close to the Greddy... with cool looking titanium tips and sounds really nice at the right RPMs from outside) and have heard many great things about the Borla (I also like how it sounds). My problem (actually more a question) with the Borla though is the design of the pipe entering the muffler and weight. Weight is also my problem with the RB exhaust, despite it being quiet.

If you just want quiet than stay stock.

Racing Beat. Will give you the gains that all the others do (pretty much best case scenario is around 3-4 hp for catbacks). It sounds stock until about 5000+ RPm, then it sounds a bit throatier. Always sounded the best to me out of all the catbacks that I have heard.
