-------Racing Beat exhaust: pops? CHECK ENGINE LIGHT?--------(help)
i've installed the racing beat exhaust for almost a year. it sounds great, especially at high rpm, and i really like it, excpet one thing which has been bothering me.
after about half an year, i noticed that the exhuast starts to pop. At the beginning it seems that it only pops when the temperature is high outside. now it pops all the time, it vibrates so obviously that i can feel it from the diver's seat. It is about 1s between pops, but it only pops at low rpm. The poping's gone when i drive. it only pops when the car is parked. And it seems to pop less frequently when the weather is cold.
i've asked dealer about this, but he told me it was something about back pressure and it was fine; however, i've seen another rx8 with the aftermarket exhuast of another brand, and it doesn't not pop like mine does. Is there any problem with my engine? Or the exhaust? Or it is normal?
And yesterday i went a town which was very far away from my home , and i drove around 711km in about 7 hrs. i stopped a few times on the way to let both my car and myself rest a bit.
when i got home, everything was fine. but after about one hr, when i started the engine again, the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT was on, and it has been continously on. I 've read the thread about it which people say it is likely because of the fuel cap. however, in my case, is it possible that it is related to either the exhuast or the distance i've traveled, or maybe both?
Many thanx!!!!

I've had my RB exhaust on for about 6 months and it only pops when I shift. It is not very noticable, only if you are listening for it. I did notice a change at idle with the way the car vibrates.
It just pops constantly when at idle?

Tian, see if your car sounds like mine at idle:
http://proxy.searchirc.com/revi/borla_and_revi.wmv
The car will stumble at idle due to the way it was designed. They could make it smooth, but it would cost you fuel (higher idle speed).
Stock exhaust will hide the sound.

It also pops when i rev it up to the redline and let it drop(usually at idle), and there would be this one big poping(sounds very aggressive). But this sounds normal to me. What worries me is when it pops at idle.

I watched the video a couple of times, but the popings in it was not very noticable. I did notice a few popings at the very beginning.
I onced recorded the popings of my car, but when I uploaded the video to my compouter it was not easy to notice the popings anymore. Maybe it was because of my speakers. But the popings when you rev ur car in the video is very similar to mine.
So this is the way the aftermarket exhuasts desgin them, but does the popings at idle do any harm to the engine? And what i am also confused is that are other modified cars like civics pop in the same way? Or it only happens to rotary?

the sounds you hear on my car are normal, so if yours sounds similar, I wouldn't worry about it.
The stock exhaust hides almost all of the popping noise. There is no harm in it.
When you really get on the throttle (6000+ rpm) and for sustained periods of time, any time you shift, or let off the gas / rev, the car will spew out some unburned fuel. With a cat, it will absorb most of it. Without a cat, it hits the exhaust/midpipe and ignites. While I was aware of all of this - when it first happened with a catless midpipe, I thought something was serious wrong. It's shotgun bang loud. Since you have a cat, it's going to be heard as a popping noise, quite a bit more muffled than a shotgun going off. There's no harm in it.

Now everything makes more sense to me. Thx a lot! I will have the dealer check the CEL next week, and i will post the result.
by the way , as you described above, is that why some racing cars have flames coming out of their exhuasts when they race?
