I know your are on the right track with your intake mod. Who cares about low RPM's anyway. :p

I actually don't treat this car like I did my 60's and 70's muscle cars, but I might one day. I'm looking for the absolute best intake for N/A. In fact I want to retain that intake when I finally go SC down the road. No TC for me.

Hmmm, I thought I read that they had decided to keep the VFAD...but I guess we won't know for sure until its actually available.

I agree. This is NOT a low rpm car! lol! Man the the SC would be nice. I'll look for your name !
At this moment my unbias(lol) opinion is that the home shad tree mods to the stock airbox is about as good as it gets. When RB releases their box it will be right and you can believe what they say. But for now heck mine does just fine.

REVi Air Intake Kit
Yes, we know... this project has seemed to take forever to complete! We finally have some good news; this kit is nearing completion and will be available in approximately 2 weeks. Although this process took a bit longer than expected due to some unique challenges with several suppliers, we are very pleased with the resulting product.

Here are some details of the REVi Air Intake Kit. The Variable Fresh Air Duct (VFAD) located under the nose is not required and is removed prior to the installation of our intake kit. The custom-designed K&N filter element is completely encased in a sound-deadening enclosure to reduce intake noise to a tolerable level. Extending into the air filter element is a tuned-length air horn that directs air past the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. The Racing Beat design retains one of the OEM intake duct screens in order to reduce turbulence across the MAF sensor in order to maintain "smooth" idle characteristics.

Unlike several of the available intake kits on the market, the Racing Beat REVi Air Intake Kit provides measurable performance improvements, a tolerable sound level output, non-compromised idle characteristics, and true "cold air" benefits. Watch for news of our "ram-air" duct that will transform this system into the ultimate "cold-air" intake system for the RX-8! (Available Summer 2005)

I am not aware of ANY intake for the RX-8 having received a CARB exemption
at this point. We will likely apply for an exemption for this intake in the
future, but at this time it is not technically legal to install this intake
on any CA emissions equipped car. Due to the cost of the procedure, required
paperwork, design constraints, out-of-state headquarters, etc... many
aftermarket vendors of these types of parts never undertake the process of
obtaining a CARB exemption for their products. The design of the REVi Intake
has us encouraged that this can receive an exemption, but we will only know
for sure once the product has been submitted for testing per the CARB
requirements. We do not have a timeline for this project. Because of the
extensive work and cost requirements, we try and group as many model years
together as possible. For example, we would like to include a group of
2004-2007 RX-8's together in our exemption application if possible, rather
than submitting the application now for just the 2004-2005 model years.

I know this whole topic can be rather confusing, and many vendors make
unsupported claims of "50 state" or "emissions legal" in their marketing
claims, when in fact they are technically not legal! This might be more of
ignorance of the law than a true intent to deceive you, but your best bet is
to educate yourself (and these vendors) so that you don't face any surprises
when you take your car to the dealer or your smog test station.

I will be placing more information regarding this topic on our site in the
near future in an attempt to address some of the common misconceptions with
regards to this matter.

Oh man! DO I really want to shove out this money for the intake? Umm.. Let's see.
Well she's got quality and performance and designed to give you 2 to 3 HP across the board.

Well that's a Hell of alot better than all the Dyno charts I've seen on the K&N.

Then there's all the complaints I've read about loss of power. In fact I met a couple of of people that have returned them. Sure it get massive HP at top end. But who the Hell drives around town a 8,000 RPM? And the all the charts on the K& N keep saying up and down during the normal Rpm range. I need something reliable.

It's alot of money... Can I trust them. Sure I can't go wrong with the quality. And their claim about performance I believe them.

What is the HP gain? I have read all of Racing Beat's website on the REVi and they do not state what the HP gain is.....they have done enough testing that the must know it.... I can only infer that you gain 1HP by removing one of the mesh screens that smooth our airflow around the MAF...that is the only reference to HP gain on the RB website..and it is an indirect reference at that.

Before I purchase something I want to know what I am getting. RB is the best I agree, but $320 for 1HP? gain and a smoother idle? seems unreasonable.

If my flywheel, aFE high flow filter, and N flash provide a smoother idle...hell this car should be idling like a Lexus V8...how much smoother of an idle can I have. It already is smooth and steady.

I actually went over to RB the other day. They are very close to my work so I figured I would pop by and check them out. I walked in and started chatting with one of the guys at the counter and told him about my 8. He immediatley took me over to look at the cut-away display of their new intake. He walked me through the feature of the design and then told me you should expect to see an ~5 hp gain across the entire power band. Not just high revs. If that truely is the case then I would say it would say that is a nice increase.

To me 5 hp across the board is better than 10 hp at +5K rpm. And I tend to believe after all have learned about the 8 is that a great gain from a aftermarket intake.
