This might be a bad place to ask this but I didnt wanna start a new thread.

Whats the differance between the 04/05/06 ECU/PCM? I was just wondering why they need to have a differant flash for the 3 cars. Anyone have any idea?

i talked to them at ss9 and they said that the race version is if you have an exhaust system (intake midpipe exhaust) the race version supposedly gives,if any, a little more hp. but thats about it. so basically the race version is if you have an open exhaust system. hope i helped.

there is actually a different configuration of the PCM from 04 to 05 cars. for one the Flash memory was increased substantially. also 2004 cars were able to be flashed with one code for all of NA. for 2005 and later Mazda has to have seperate flashes for CARB states and the rest of the country and canada.

then for 06 you have a the 4port replaced with the 6port which im sure they are looking at.

thats what my initial thinking was but then when you have to smog the car it wouldn't pass and couldn't be registered. Not everyone with the flash could get it "passed" through friends and would have to put oem back to pass. Would they then have to buy the rb flash again?

edit: By epa I assumed he meant pollution wise rather than mileage and things of that sort. I suppose I'll keep my mouth shut now, appologies to all.

Shipping my PCM to them might make it hard to drive to work. Oh well.

I believe Mazda made the car run rich up top to keep temps down for cat longevity.

They don't touch the maps in the area that would be checked during an emissions test. It would appear to be a stock RX-8 at those points. It would pass just fine. Even in California.
