Does a sock on the AEM reduce airflow to the filter? I remember specifically not considering the AEM cause it might suck in water But I also have the unrational fear that water might suck up through the ram air duct and into my RB box too

i drove my MS CAI without a sock[Same as AEM] through rain, didnt have a problem. things you have to remember are, stay out of low areas that collect water, do not follow cars to closely, slow down for dips, and light on the throttle so you dont suck up as much water.

i do have a sock now. obviously your reducing some airflow considering your covering the filter, but doubt it really makes a difference

Florida, pours down rain a lot. No issue with RAM air and Revi, but then again................I don't go submarining either.
If you think about where the placement of the RAM air is, that's an awful long vertical way for water to travel even if getting sucked in.

And with the temps that our engine bays get that little bit of moisture probably evaporates pretty quickly.

I shorted the MAF sensor in my Mazda3 with a cold air intake that ran low down in the car. It happened when I ran through an unexpected puddle on a freeway ramp in third gear at high RPM. I won't take that chance again. Years ago I had asked K&N how much I would lose with their Mazda3 intake ("Typhoon") with their sock over the filter. They replied with "not enough to notice" and "1 or 2 hp". Their website claims the Typhoon for the 2005 2.3L Mazda3 makes 5.74 hp.

I know a few people with the MSP/AEM intake. All of them had water issues (rain, car washes, etc.) at one point or another here in south Texas where rain is not abundant.

I just bought a used AEM but I am modifying it a bit to suit my needs.

Ive been in the same position. Not sure whether to go with RB or AEM. I prefer the AEM for its looks and sounds. Forget gains obviously wont get any with either one. If not a little bit. But im leaning towards the AEM, actually the MS. And when i get mine i plan on making some kind of secondary grill to block water cause i drive my car year round and i use the touchless car washes in winter.

Well, food for thought if you are buying an intake new. Shady just made 218WHP NA (205WHP before Cobb tuning) using the stock intake and a paper filter.

as to why I just had to blow my money on the autoexe sport induction box and keep my stock paper filter.

it comes down to personal preference though. the RB will fit perfectly, look 'stock-ish' while the AEM leaves that part of the engine bay looking rather bare.

I switched to the AEM simply because the Revi Duct wouldn't fit well behind my new bumper but I made sure to pick up the intake tray box from BHR to make it look more 'complete'
are you selling the revi duct? i'll be interested. thanks.

I didn't get the cf box, I wish. I just got the cheapo one 'cause it matches my car.
I didn't get the filter either. I'm really digging the autoexe stuff.

Hey now I have a K&N panel filter! I always forget to list that. Anyone running a stock setup needs the K&N, just don't over oil it and get crazy.

I drove around with the RB intake for 3 months and felt no difference it was just louder which is something I don't need.

IMO Intakes are waste of money and time you're better off saving a bit more and getting an AP, a mid pipe, or a few cases of premix.

I stand corrected then Although I doubt the filter media played a part in the power you made.

I have the AEM intake and I've driven it through storms and mine is filly exposed behind an open grille. I don't know how but I've never had any problems. I do use the sock that came with it but that's pretty much it.

If I still had a paper filter I'd find out for sure. I'm flowing 250 gs at 8500 right now.

You dont drive it i winter do you?? thats the only thing worrynig me. I use the touchless car wash in winter and if it gets soaked and freezes its a no no for the engine. Thats what confuses me some people say they have no problems other say they have major problems.

That's crazy, the most I have seen is 205 GS. Are you going to dyno again elsewhere to make sure it wasn't a fluke?

This thread just sealed the deal for me on the AEM.
Amazon.com got one for $285 and free shipping which is a steal

I don't know about you but $150 is a nice amount of money to save on something you get almost no gain on.

Just got the Racing Beat intake used on Ebay for $260. I like the whole concept of the velocity stack inside the filter. Maybe it makes a difference, maybe it doesn't. But I've seen first hand on a flowbench testing motorcycle carbs that a straight open carb doesn't flow as much air as a carb with a velocity stack on the end.
