I await this unit with open arms and a heavy foot. It sounds like an auto-xers dream. Lighen up the car, and keep the sound within the legal limits at most venues. If it gains HP? Even better... but that's not a 'big' deal for auto-x stock class.
Whoohoo!

Jim Mederer has designed several sets of headers for the RX-8, and he used all of his common "tricks" in the various configurations, but none of them produced notable gains. Again, Mazda has done a pretty good job with the design of the stock manifold.
I thought that the removal of the cat did yield some gains, but it has been awhile since we outfitted a project car with this set-up and I have forgotten the actual numbers.

Go Texas Longhorns!
Jim,
is it possible to introduce a silencer into the muffler to get the sound down slightly without hurting the gains?
is this unit a true cat back? is the 12lb savings on both the muffler and the back piping?

All the other exhausts seem to add 10-20 HP tops with a race pipe. Does respectable gains mean 20-30 or 30-40.

Zaku-8,
On my turbo I got the Racing Beat cat back and that was just about perfect for me. The sound was lower but louder. I added the SR Motorsports hi-flow cat unit (w/resonator) & it got louder, to the point where I was a bit annoyed. Not unbearable but definitely louder. I was going to dynamat the bottom of my trunk to cut some of the exhaust noise. But now that I have my turbo on it has literally sounds like when I was stock. Not even as loud as when I just had the RB exhaust on. I don't mind. It was getting annoying during long trips...maybe I'm just getting old .

This really isn't intended as a "street" muffler, although it can certainly be used for that purpose if you want. Eliminating the second outlet, tips, and reducing the system to a single outlet offered substantial weight savings. We fabricated a prototype and ran it on the stock Renesis engine on or dyno and obtained very respectable power gains over the stock and REV8 system.
The sound level increase is certainly noticeable, however it is not objectionable. From inside the car the sound level is increased, most noticeably around 5000-6000 RPM, then the tone moderates at higher RPM. From outside the car, you can definitely hear the RX-8 coming and going, but it has more of a "tuned-V6" note than anything harsh or buzzy. Our initial sound level tests with the db meter proved promising. We intended to test the muffler on the autocross course this coming weekend, but it appears that the weather (and our test driver) may require that we push it back a week.
Since this intended primarily as a race unit, we do not intend to offer any type of “cover” for the second muffler tip opening. If you want the ultimate no-frills performance exhaust for your RX-8, this will be definitely worth considering. If the testing goes as planned, we are looking at further reducing the weight of this unit as we continue the development of this project.
Let me know if you have any further questions, however I can’t give out any “numbers” unit we get deeper into the project.
