Some company in Swiss (powerchips.ch) pretend they have a "chip" for it. But apparently they sometimes make such statement just to trigger and gauge ineterest for a new product. On top of this, the claim in power and torque increase is absolute BS.

Yes, we have been working with the ECU, and have gotten to the point of being able to download, reprogram, and reflash the ECU. However, that was the easy part.... finding "hidden" gains has been a challenge.
We have been busy with several more pressing projects recently (i.e. air intake) and just haven't gotten around to getting back to this project. More will be posted as things advance.

One would think that with Racing Beat's reputation/relationship with Mazda that they would have the ECU programming schematics at their disposal directly from Mazda.... Maybe that's not the case...

Mazda is VERY tight with ECU and programming data. When we were working with Mazda on the Protege MP3 program we found that they were not very forthcoming with this information, even though we were trying to modify the performance of this car on their behalf.
They have their own reasons we suppose, we just work within the parameters of each specific job. We have spent considerable time on our own attempting to understand the programming and data, and have indeed made some very significant progress, but more is still be to learned.
On the RX-8 we have been able to change timing, mixture, etc.... but the results have resulted in modest gains. But again, we are currently working on several projects and simply have not found the time to return to this project.
Projects currently in the fire that our engineers (Jim Mederer and Damon) are working on:
RX-8 Radiator Protective Screens
RX-8 REVI Intake - tooling and filter prototype
Miata carbon fiber intake duct
13B 6 Port Holley Intake Kit retesting and revisions
RX-8 Body Kit fitting - molds arrive today from Japan
Mazda project vehicle developmental work
and this is just the REALLY active list..... the list of projects that we pile on these guys is endless!

sounds like you need to hire a young, enthusiastic mechanical engineer who has made significant gains on his own RX8 by tuning the a/f ratio and timing advance on an e-manage... someone like myself

You are absolutely right, the more help the better! The first question in the interview will be, "And just how much HP gains have YOU discovered?"
But how are you on knocking out the rest of the items on the list? This would only be the FIRST week's projects.

Well my first answer would be 10-22hp at the wheels in the 5500-9000 rpms range (the only place I can effectively tune with an e-manage ) as I have shown in this thread https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-engine-tuning-forum-63/results-42257/ with a raise in cat temp of less then 10%.
My second answer would be ( <looks across office at "To Do" board> ) I'd rather have 20 fun projects then the current 11 projects I hate!!

umm... it's kind of the same thing, one using a box, the other not. different ways of doing exactly the same thing (still the most effective method of enhancing the engines performance commercially available).

The best way to work would be to increase the target catalyst temperature in the catalyst protection stategy module (say from 960°C to 1000°C or more depending on when you want to replace your cat!). That's the first mod that I'd do.
Then, I'd set a new target lambda (slightly lean AFR) at part throttle to increase FE in cruise.
But one will have to find the table containing these parameters first!
