RP Supercat info
I just got off the phone with Arie at RP, the "yes,it's fast" folks. He said they are sold out for a couple weeks and the new ones will be slightly more free flowing. A clamp on hanger will be shipped to any who buy one or bought one, on request, for no additional charge. The new one uses less cells for better flow, then he got quite technical, and offered a world of interesting information. He says the stock one, though heavy, has very good flow for an OEM part. Better, in fact, than some of the aftermarket "high flow" cats for the 8, and better than one of the most popular after market high flow cats sold for the RX-7 according their flow meters and dyno tests. He was very upfront and honest, carefull not to trash his competition, but saying it is buyer beware world, and many spend money on items that actually rob the engine of power. Says to ask questions before buying, such as how many, and what type of cells. Less cells and steel rather than ceramic are prefered. He also said midpipe is always an improvement over any cat, but avoid your local EPA center.
Please post other RP Supercat information here, on this thread.
I really didn't want to start a new thread, but didn't know where to post this, as the RP Supercat threads are widely dispersed. Please, Mr. Webmaster break up the Performance upgrades section into several sub sections. Intakes, Exhaust, FI, and Engine management sections for easier navagation. Thx

aww man. i just ordered one about 3 weeks ago and had a hanger welded and installed...it cost me 65 bucks to weld a hanger and get it installed. only reason i didn't install it myself was cuz of the hanger... darn i shoulda waited.

I got one about 3 weeks ago... no hanger needed really for me since it was so light, but I did have to pay an extra 10 bucks because the heatshield was rattling and was driving me crazy (had to fix it)....
Sucks that the new ones will be higher performing now i feel slightly inadequate!

If he said how many cells the new one has, I can't remember. It is not just the number of cells, but also how deep they are. Flow is all that matters I suppose. I am ordering one when they come in. From what I have read on the forum, the hanger is only needed w the RacingBeat exhaust. None of the other types have reported a rattle, that I have seen. What type do you have Toxin440?

FEWER Cells...NOT "Less" Cells.
And - yup...w/o knowing how many cells his cat uses vs OEM vs "Brand X" it's all a crap shoot. I mean, honestly, I could tell my my OEM Cat has SE7EN Cells...or (MyrtleMadness)8 cells - unless somebody counted,we'd have to take their word for it.

When purchasing an aftermarket cat, I was more concerned with its ability to handle the rotary temps, especially once I go to FI. At that time the ones available were from Canzoomer (random tech), SR, and RP. I bought it from RP since I'd used some of their parts on my 7s with great success. I've put about 20K on the cat with no issues other than having to weld in a hanger.

Ok I'm really considering a highflow cat. Right now I've got a Borla exhaust and AEM CAI. Adding a highflow is going to make my car louder of course. But just how loud. I've heard the sound clips but that doesn't do justice from what I've read.
My question on loudness is (considering my current mods of course):
1) Is it loud at just full throttle (3500rpm and up) and pretty much mellow while cruising? For example, I remember a lot of reviews on the AEM CAI in which a lot of people said they were too loud. Now that I have one, that thing isn't close to being as loud as my NISMO CAI I had on my Spec V. Even at full throttle. My AEM is pretty much un-noticed while cruising also.
2) Is it loud (nice race sound loud) or freakin loud (annoyingly loud Harley chopper loud) at full throttle? Like, if a cop pulled me over for having a loud exhaust and a Harley passes by, can I make a legitimate argument (of course he's still going to give me a fix-it ticket and let the Harley go by because it's A HARLEY)?

I talked with Chris today at RP. He said they are having a problem getting in one of the parts for the hanger clamp that they designed, and that is the cause of the hold up with the new hanger. I asked him how their Supercat compares with others, he said SR was ceramic and not a high temp cat like thiers, and that it had less flow on their flowmeters than the Supercat. He says the Supercat has 25% less flow than a catless midpipe, but 41% more flow than a Magnaflo. (which is also ceramic and not high temp) He said due to the proximity of the cat to the engine, high temp is prefered if you ever lean it out. The stock one is ceramic too, using metal allows it to be smaller and lighter. They show dyno's on thier website showing about 8 and a half hp bump with the Supercat and 11 and a half with the midpipe, both with GReddy exhaust.

you might take the time to do that...
the magnaflo on my car 3" from exhaust man to 3" borla exhaust is just as strong as the 3" midpipe with borla resonator...
sorry 41% less flow is a silly #... i think the stock cat could beat that..
and i am a huge supporter of rp.... i think the old cat was the best....
i had that on a good tip... mazsport..
rx7 not= rx8

Got a CEL this morning without any problems with the car. Last time this happened I had a burned up O2 sensor near the cat. If I get an RP supercat with a new O2 sensor installed, think it would fix this issue? I just had my O2 sensor replaced like 2 months ago. I'm also 1K away from warranty voidation also. I really don't need my car coming apart at 50K!!!
