RX-8 aftermarket exhausts SUMMARY

Noise got a bit much for him driving around Tokyo. Its a superb sound but a tad embarrising dropping your kids off or taking off a a decent pace at a traffic light. Decided to swap the cat back to normal. But before that we ran down to Super Autobacs to put her on the dyno to see what we'd be losing. She dyno'd at a lame 193.1ps at the wheels. The guy who did the dyno said it was a really nice sound. He also said it was too loud to pass the roadworthy test that you have to do every 2 years. We measured it at 104db at 6,500 rpm.
R-Magic swapped the old cat in and the beast was calmed. Need to re-dyno the car now to see what he lost. Driving impressions are that the car is not as light and responsive low down. its got more of the stock feeling back where you step on the peddle and it hesitates. With the R-Magic cat, there was no hesitation, it was just instantly on, hence the exhaust had more flow to sing with. The cat looks like a really nice mod if you've got a quieter exhaust in this respect.
With the headers and flywheel, it still spins faster up the rev range than my 8. So I'm dead jealous of that by itself. You can also hear the headers now that cat is out. Sounds really nice up front but only when you really hammer it. Definitely not intrusive. I'll re-post when the next dyno is done.

Why cant somebody just buy a Magnaflow race muffler for 70 bucks. Go down to Meineke and get it put on with a y-pipe to create the dual outlet? My guess it would sound good and only cost around 230 bucks in all (went there yesterday..)? Can the rotary not work with normal mufflers or what? I dont see why people spend 700 dollars on exhaust if its just for the name....

I'm a newby and I need some help
Hey Bob,
I just got my 2004 RX8 and I want the performance from an aftermarker Exhaust, but I dont know who's the best. There are a billion custom exhaust shops here and they all claim to be able to customize me an exhaust for half the price of a bolt-on, I need to know if this is a bone head idea or is it a good investment....

If you want more performance from an RX-8, changing the exhaust is a waste of time and money. The stock exhaust works very well. If you want to change the sound, that's a different story.

I'm not aware that they've ever done anything in Ti, just stainless, and haven't heard of anything for an RX-8

im thinking about the turbo xs complete race exhaust but i hear its too loud and frowned upon. lol. they claim a 25hp increase and 8 in torque (which for any 8 owner is a bit fishy), and there are a few people whose shrouds are melting due to the short extent of the tips. opinions??? would i be better off with the legamax or MS??

I have a 2004 with only around 9000 km around 4500 miles on it I beleiive and she's never seen a winter. I just recently went with an all stainless set up from the cat back. Not 2.5" tubeing but 3 " stainless of coarse with Dual stainless Magnaflow mufflers. Found a custom shop to fabricate one for me and they stainless tig welded every thing no clamps on entire system and what a job they performed! The 3" tips along with exuast finishers look incredible. As far as sound it is a beautifull thing. Sounds mean but not annoying on the highway. Under load in first and secound gear if I let of the gas to quickly she'll let off a slight pop and backfire faintly sounding somewhat like a car for the track. Many people will argue that adding an exaust will not increase performance but I found that not to be the case. I noticed a change in how she performed immediately.

So where are you guys finding the B&B exhausts for a reasonable price? The vividracing site is asking over $800 for it. I was going to order the racing beat exhaust but they claimed it would be over 12 weeks before I could get it so i think i am going to decide against that.

The R-magic exhaust is cool. I have it by the way...
Deeper, meaner, more blunt, but makes the RX-8 sound more conventional. You lose a bit of the rotary whine and sophistication and take on more of the character of a conventional muscle car (which some may love and some may only be luke warm about that). How you would like, would be a matter of taste and preference. The R-Magic exhaust is very much a "middle type" exhaust that I can see many people being at least OK with the sound.
Not too loud in the lower rpm range, but not as quiet as stock either. I could not tolerate it getting any louder. With that said, the R-Magic exhaust is like in the middle of the pack in terms of db noise. I don't want to imagine a louder exhaust or taking out the cat and getting any louder. I like to listen to my music and I'm not interesting in sounding rice crazy.
The bluish titanium tips stand out on the car. Slight cool factor as you can see it from far away.
R-Magic claims about 13HP (car does feel (butt dyno) a bit more responsive). G-Timer is showing possible on average 5HP increases. Hard to tell (after trying to eliminate other factors), but does seem to have a slightly positive impact in the 1/4 mile. Does seem to be better at 100+MPH speeds too.
The R-Magic exhaust is a decent bit lighter than a stock exhaust (I think its the lightest stainless steel dual exhaust), and cost around $1,100 U.S. dollars if brand new and at JDM price (excluding export/shipping price).
However, the Borla sounds interesting. Like it was keeping more of the stock Rotary sound, but deeper. They are cheaper, claim 10HP, and to be 10 pounds lighter. I do not like how the pipe enters the side of the muffler though... I question the design and flow of that... I like the pipe sizes and design of the R-magic exhaust better.
If I ever decide to switch though, I might give the Borla exhaust a try. But, I'm satisfied with the R-Magic exhaust for now...

Hey,
Wonder if anyone could give me some gen on changing the fuel air ratios with the rx8 after fitting a cat back??
I recently fitted an AEM custom built 63" cat back exhaust system to my 2005 rx8 however being down in south africa many people aren't to clued up on changing the "electronics" after fitting the exhaust on.. any ideas as to what i can do? or if i should invest in an ecu??
