That's about right. Majority of people are dynoing at around 170. SR is talking about rear wheel horsepower here, not flywheel or crank hp.

The topic is discussed in almost every single performance thread on the forum here, and is debated frequently. A simple search on "horsepower" will provide you a MULTITUDE of starting points, including dyno problems associated with DSC/TCS issues, etc.

Yeah, if this car is dynoing at 170 rwhp some of you seriously got duped

Sounds like they dynoed the automatic with the AC on and then dynoed the manual with the AC off for before and after.

Most of us didn't buy this car for staggering horsepower dyno queen numbers. Do you own an RX8? Because its a hell of a fun car to drive and I don't regret buying it over an STi/evo/cobra. Plus its N/A so theres room for big gains possibly from FI.

the majority of rx8 do not dyno at 170. they seem to be all over the place, i think i've seen as low as 163 and as high as 196. i'd say the average is around 185.

Well, guys, a 238 "claimed" horsepower RWD car should make 202.3 horsepower to the rear wheels, so Mazda is still lying if this is what you're dynoing.

No, I don't own an RX-8, but I drive one almost every day. I sell Nissans and Mazdas.

You're right, and the average dyno number usually comes out at 185 RWHP. So basically it's one of two things:

1) Car is going into safe mode and cutting power a little when dyno'd
2) Car is actually not getting 238, but more like 225 HP. Which would be just baaarely within the 5% legal limit for advertised horsepower that manufacturers must meet.

I've been talking to my RX-7 rotary experts and they kept talking about the "safe mode" on the Dyno . . . . I think screw the dynos and see how fast the cars are running at the track.

Its plenty fast for me, not like my 340hp AWD Eclipse, but fun. Car just screams LARGE TURBO with 2.6L of displacement and a 9500 rpm power band.

If you read about the RX-8's "safe mode," you've probably been reading too much of Dave Coleman's Technobabble. So, if our RX-8's rwhp is about 185, and the engine is supposedly 238, then there is about a 22% drivetrain loss. Okay, now how does one calculate drivetrain loss? If anyone can do it in one sweeping equation, please feel free to do so. But, cretinx, you do make a point about the trashing the dyno charts. We are not here to turn the RX-8 into a dyno queen. Also, though rotary engine displacement is questionable, I think we should stick to the 1.3 liter convention. Wakeech shot one of my theories down about the subject. I'm not going to start over with a new debate.

Rotarygod made a huge post about the displacement a while back if you want to try to search around for that, I'm not sure which section its under. I also don't think you can use numbers that aftermarket parts manufacturers claim they dynoed. They are going to use the lowest possible pulled numbers for stock and the highest possible with their parts to make it look like their products give huge gains. 22% drivetrain loss seems like a lot for a non-AWD car....usually its close to around 15% i believe.

While not 100% accurate, using a hp calculator and setting the weight at 3100lbs with driver and a 1/4 mile of 14.5@94mph gives you 237hp. I believe this a reproducable result on the dragstrip though I have not taken my RX-8 personally. It really is difficult to say what kind of power this car makes.

I really do not believe it has a 22% drivetrain loss either. What would be the point of a carbon fiber driveshaft if it did?

I have heard it makes 225 and I have heard 238. Only Mazda knows and perhaps Racing Beat. I thought I once heard they mentioned 225?

jewish-rx8,

I would just like to mention I have no clue what your posts say as they are very difficult to read. I would recommend writing them in word first where you have both a spell and grammar checker.

I have had my 8 for a few weeks now. I can't be past how good it looks, how well it handles, and the engine and exhaust notes that test you right foot's discipline regulary. With all of those pros, the only cons that I am concerned with are those that affect real world driveability and function. Personally, I would complain about the fact that we even needed an M Flash, or an Airbag Recall...etc. To me these things are more important...I have raced sportbikes for years, and the occasional track day in an MR2 or M3, and short of the bikes, the RX-8 is more car than I can push....right now. I have yet to find its handling limits on the track....mainly because I am carrying more speed through the corners than I have ever done before....so it's a little un-nerving to press through an of camber sweeper at 100+ and have the car just stick it...uh ugh...not for 30k. Don't get me wrong, I have flogged The 8 to an inch of it's life ( a production mule), and it is an incredible ride when you don't have to care about the result...but when try to stick an apex with a Mustang Cobra on your *** is another story, and trust me...M Flash or not, 238HP or not, Dyno or not...that Cobra didn't get by me. Trust me, there were lots of words after that session.

So, lets be more concerned about the following ridiculous cons:

1) I am getting 12 miles per gallon? Anyone run on regular unleaded? 200 miles a tank, C/H
2) The strange power drop at 7000rpm even after the M flash.
3) The strange high rpm hesitation that has been mentioned before here, that is disappears when you disable BOTH the DSC and TCS.
4) The poor A/C performance....COLD, COOL, LUKEWARM.
5) The amazing amount of heat from either engine or exhaust that simply roasts you in the cabin.

These are real world issues, and if anyone has a solution....speak up!!

Sorry for the long post. I think that this site, and it's members are great....and I really appreciate finding such a comprehensive, diverse library of facts, and opinions in one place.

Who's next?

Who's next?
1. check your MAF and clean it (I heard this helps)
2. Check your Coils and or your ports might be sticking (I believe 2 of the 6 ports open at 7000)
3. No idea
4. There is a TSB for that
5. Yep that part sucks.

He's only in high school. I do believe that you should spend more time studying and perfecting your spelling than worrying about how fast your car is. Of course a high schooler with a $25-$30K car might not have much to worry about when he gets out of school.

you can't accurately dyno this car on a chassis dyno - its been proven how many times now....

Guys, if you want to argue do it in private rather than waste my time doing it between posts. Save the childish antics for when or if you meet in person. Besides, it just makes both of you look dumb and Ike could take both of you out.
