Serious Question Aem Cai Or New K&n Cai
I did a search and it seems like i'm not getting the answers that I want, a lot of the answers seem biased....I'm going to buy either one in the next day or two. I need to know from honest 8 owners which is better for the car. Yet, keep in mind that it's an AT 8.
I want a good sound, loud is ok, because I do have an aftermarket exhaust!
Easy to install without having to do additional work
Easy to clean and maintain!
No problems with warranty or CEL lights..
Please give me feedback I'm new to the RX-8 so all your help is appreciated! thank you

well, as the AEM is a true CAI, it is difficult to get to (you have to take the bumper off, may or may not be difficult for you), & it it more prone to sucking up water. the potential for hydrolock (if you can call it that with a rotary) is extremely low, but it is a possibility nonetheless. that being said, the filter is exposed to cooler air & thus has the potential for a higher output increase, but i would decide on sound, if you get the chance to listen to either of them.
i can't comment on the k&n, sorry...
good luck.

I personnally am waiting for the Mazdaspeed CAI that should be out very soon. No warranty or CEL issues. Fitment should be excellent, and it has been compared to AEM as far as design. I am sure others will be along shortly to give your their opinions.

im using the AEM right now bro. It's a CAI so the filter rests right under the bumper thus making it soak in as much cold air possible, But you have to watch out for hydrolocking, i drive my car in the rain i havnt had any problems yet. But in order to hyrdo lock your filter needs to be fully submerged under water.
The K&N is a Short Ram intake , it doesnt get much cold air in. But you wont have to worry about the problem of hydroing. then again its not THAT easy to hydro.

Easy to install = K&N Version 2 (Short Ram Intake not CAI). But its only easier to install because you don't have to take off the front bumper, which is pretty easy to do also.
You will probably have problems with warranty for both intakes, but because the AEM is a CAI, its is more prone to suck up water (hydrolock), which will easily void your warranty. There is always ways around this but its just something for you to consider.
Get the Simota Intake when its all fixed up.

the ms cai and the aem cai are virtually identical, as far as i know. as for warranty issues, i have the aem on my 8, have had it since last oct if i remember correctly. no issues with warranty at all. as for hydrolock, i dont think you will have any issues.

I had the HKS originally, then i moved to REVi and then finally went turbo.... From my knowledge the best one around is the REVi then I would agree with everyone here and say go with the AEM. I've seen Lurch's threads about the AEM and they seem very believeable and accurate!
Best AFTERMARKET INTAKES in order of best and reliability: No Biased opinions Just from what I've seen people say....
1) REVi w/ Duct
2) AEM CAI
3) K&N TYPHOON 2Gen SRI
4) Umnitza/Simonza
5) HKS Suction
6) Blitz SUS
7) Weapon R Intake...Not too sure about this one, I don't know much about it
Good Luck!

I have K&N Short Ram Version 2 installed. I had Version 1 now but there was some issues so I sold it off and got myself this one.
Sound is ok if you're a normal driver. but as soon as you floor it all the way, its going to be loud, very loud.
Hydrolock is really rare. If your area rains/floods alot (New Orelands?) then you might have to think twice. but if its some place like new York .... you should be fine. (me)
Dont expect MUCH performance increase tho. Maybe 5 HP the most.

.
.
i have to fully disagree with this.
I used to be under that impression, too. Last New Year's Eve, when the flooding hit Sacramento (Northern California), I drove my car (lowered Mazda 6 with CAI) through about 8 inches of water. The filter wasn't "fully submerged" but i can say with 100% surety that it sucked up water and hydrolocked my engine. I even removed my CAI after the event and saw that my MAF was dripping wet.
So don't take hydrolocking too lightly.
But on a good note... insurance gave me GREAT compensation and i now have an 8.
