Should I get a Cat-Back or a New cat/midpipe?

I was thinking about ordering a Racing Beat cat back, but now I am thinking maybe I should get the RP super-cat.

Would one be louder than the other? Would one give more power than the other?

Just to specify, if I get the super-cat, i will use the stock cat-back, atleast untill next year when I buy the RB cat-back. Likewise if I get the catback now, I'll get the super-cat next year.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Shrubba

from what i read, the exhaust does little, so the hi flow cat would be the way to go.

Which would give the 'coolest' sound? I know this is totaly subjective, but I am still interested in what everyone thinks.

I just remember I had a Racing Beat cat back on my FD3S RX-7, and it was great. but what I really liked was the down pipe I got for it, man was that sweet! It really made it sound nice. I know that it isn't exactly fair to compare, but oh well...

If you are looking for best sound, get the RB Cat back. Real hp gain (but very little extra sound with the stock cat back) then go for the RP Supercat. Which one is more important to you ?

get the hi flow cat if you want more hp for what i understand from ppl. I think its wise to get the Tanabe exhaust if you install a hi flow cat, because its not that loud but still has the deep throaty sound. loved it . Thats what I am getting.... will post pics soon, i should have it within 4 weeks. cant wait.....

Racing Beat is the quietest exhaust (that I have had/heard) with the high flaw cat. I had this setup, and it was great.

I think it depends on what you want. If you want a couple of horsepower, go with the RP supercat. If you want some more sound, then go with a cat-back system.

I did both at the same time and have been pleased with my combination of RP supercat and Greddy SP2 catback.

I didn't have one. As it is a catalytic, and the O2 sensor plugs into it, you are OK. With a straight pipe, you don't have a cat, so it sets it off more times than not, even if you do have a resonator.

For me, I ordered the RP supercat and am having bigger/better looking tips installed on the stock exhaust.

Since cat-backs do almost nothing on these cars power-wise I can't justify the $500+ for them so I'll dress up the stock one and install the supercat which has been proven to make good power.

i'd definately get the catback first...

i have the greddy catback with rp midpipe (no cat) and it sounds great.

i originally had the b&b catback with rp midpipe but was way too loud.

the rb catback and rp midpipe (or supercat, whichever u prefer) would sound nice too since both greddy and rb are quiet.

reason why i think u should get the catback first is cuz a) you notice it visually b) u hear it whereas with the midpipe/supercat u wont see it and not get much with sound either

u'll feel slight gains on both... but what i noticed is with the midpipe or my friend who has the supercat... you kinda lose out on torque and unless ur driving up in the redlines frequently, i say u can wait for the midpipe/supercat =D

It was my understanding that rotaries don't lose torque like pistons engines can due to exhaust modifications. But I could be wrong.

me personally i went with the RB catback. i was a little skeptical for spending $500+ on sound but im happy that i did it. i like the look of the new tips and i really like the sound. after a little bit of driving the tone gets a little deeper and settles in.

so is the mazdaspeed just completely out of the game? I am also looking for a high flow cat/cat back exhaust combo that isn't too loud and makes power, and I was thinking something like the supercat with the mazdaspeed. any suggestions?

No, the Mazdaspeed cat back is actually a very good unit. They have a new Sports exhaust out. Some people have written a review on it. Sound is just a bit louder than the RB unit, but not as loud as the Grddy or Borla.

I purchased the mazdaspeed sport catback and it was well worth the $545 or so that I paid for it. I installed it myself, with little prior experience in doing such things, and I think the sound brings out the true character of the engine that the stock setup fails to do. The sound of the catback, especially in the lower rpms, gives the illusion of more power. Highly recommended!
