SPEED MAG. GReddy RX-8 Disappointment. only 224 bhp 1/4 mile 14.4
This thread is in regard to Speed magazines Jul/Aug issue special on the Rx-8 greddy turbo kit. with the Turbo Kit and exhaust + new spark plugs in only made 224 bhp , 172 lb.-ft . of torque. the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times were pretty much the same as stock. 5.8 secs... and 14.4 secs.... it's too bad , i was expecting more out of this upgrade. here's the site
http://www.spdmag.com/
of course this is only at 5-6 psi of boost. you can always up it a few more if you get a good boost controller.
what do you guys think?

lol...yea still good in the twisities...i do agree , but how offen are you going to be on an actual racetrack with the same cars that always talk ****? you're more likely to be on the highway or some barron straightaway in the middle of nowhere. Im just a lil upset about the results...i was just about to buy the kit myself....

Woof! Woof! Woof!
I spell stock RX-8 Dee-Oh-Gee.
Mazda would be exceeding their sales goals if the 8 ran high 13s instead of low 15s.
Maybe the Greddy on the SPEED car used the eManage & the stock Greddy maps. I've heard there's another 20+ HP to be had by using a better ECU & tweaking the maps.
Once I get my Greddy installed/tuned, I'll post 0-60 & 1/4 times...betcha it's low 14s, not mid-14s. If not, I'm going to get a boost controller & re-tune.

When I first put my kit on I was running 4 psi across the board, we tweaked the actuator rod & got to 6 psi across the rev range & 4 up top. Since then we have found/fixed a few leaks, tuned the map leaner, and adjusted the turbo further and gotten 7.5 psi across the rev range & 5.5 on the top. This kit is not good if you are simply looking to bolt something on (outside of cat back exhaust, hi-flow cat & Revi, I'm not sure what is for this car), it needs to be dynoed & tuned. 224 whp is not the norm. I got 235 whp running at 6 psi with leaks. Now that I have another 1.5 psi & fixed the leaks I am looking at 250 whp. Hell, there was another turboed RX8 in RX tuner last month & he dynoed at 241 whp & 193 lb.ft. of tq.

Did you use a boost controller to adjust the boost, or ?

No, I was planning to do that, but my mechanic had some issues finding the right wire. I need to get the wiring diagram to him. I want to run about 8 psi on regular "street" mode & go to 10 psi in "race/track" mode (with larger injectors). I have a boost controller but the question is right now I am happy with my car, do I just keep it this way (& sell the Apexi BC), or do I spend more $ & get the BC to work.

hey guys ...after researching this test car a little further i found the guys car on car domain. he's got about 250- 400 lbs of extra stereo equipt. in his trunk. im sure this weight would easily throw off 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers by a few tenths. so it would probably be more like 0-60 in 5.6 1/4 mile ~ 14.2/ 14.1.. here's his page...

look at he interior and sound system pics....

Since Swedishmax posted twice, I'll reply twice:
Time for me to weigh in (I've been at JRTC and on leave...) When the photo shoot took place, I was on TDY at Fort Gordon, GA and could not make it back to remove all the stereo equipment (though the subs were removed at the time). SPEED Mag knew that the equipment in the back would affect their results and we all concurred to go ahead with the shoot/comparo anyways, knowing that the '8's performance would be compromised. It's still my daily driver & wasn't built for land-speed records; the testers left the boost at what I had it set at. I agree that the article was not pretty, but there's plenty of room for improvement.
As for the stereo equipment weighing things down, you should then also take into account the weight of the harnesses, strut tower bars, add'l electronics, wing, body kit, etc. I don't know how much the driver weighed, so I can't comment on that nor his level of driving experience.
Also check out the latest Import Tuner, Summer Edition for a girl/car feature.
