SR Cold Air Intake

SR Cold Air Intake
Surprised nobody has posted this yet -- a true cold air intake for the 8. Price doesn't seem unreasonable. I'm going to try and get more info. And they say it is quiet -- I can't decide if that is good or bad :D

hahaha, omfg... read the description:
puh-lease. if this was not just designed for the ricer, it was at least described as it would be by one.
From SR Motorsports website
This powder coated CNC built 6061 billet aluminum and polished 304 stainless steel kit replaces the stock restrictive plastic RX-8 intake box. Our intake system is a true Ram-Air Cold Air Intake, receiving air only from outside of the super heated engine compartment. (Most intake systems are just a cone filter and pipe which grab hot air from around the radiator and the engine , which is why they don't have the same good horsepower increase that our kit does.) Our system is quiet too! No loud funky intake noise.

i'm not saying it isn't, but for god's sakes, they could say more than just buzzwords (CNC, ram-air *ha ha*, 304, billet, etc).
...and i suppose what my point is, is that this isn't being targetted at real enthusiasts, which then brings to my mind it's actual performance benefit.

You're kidding, right? What self-respecting "ricer" would buy an intake that brags about being (*gasp*) quiet???

A simple ram air intake will not work on the RX8 due to the use of MAF sensor instead of MAP sensor. If there is any ramming air, it's going to create too much turbulence and throw off the MAF sensor reading. Also when crusiing at high speed, the air that goes passing the MAF will bounce back out. You can expect a CEL right away the first time you drive it on the freeway.
A ram air intake will work only if it has a variable ram air duct that opens according to rpm, throttle position, and load. We were the first company trying to make a ram air intake and then found out in order to make a true ram air intake, it will cost at least $1000 for each one with all the electronic and butterfly valve needed. It's simply not worth it for the additonal 2-3 HP.
The factory air duct was designed to avoid direct ramming of the intake air. The primary air duct is pointing side way and the secondary air duct has a shield blocking in front of it.
So if the SR intake does have the air filter positioned at the front of the mouth, it's not going to work on a street car. You can use it for 1/4 mile when the throttle is always open.
If the filter is inside that black tube, it's just a cold air intake and it looks like it's more restrictive than stock. It can't be described as ram air intake because there is no ramming effect.
