tape-measure favor: MS Dual or Corksport exhaust

Can someone with a MS Dual Muffler Sport Exhaust or Corksport measure their canisters for me? Looking to get their circumference and length.

I have a Helix exhaust to compare with. Its canisters are 20 inches circumference, and about 14 1/8 inches in length, with around a 1/2 inch outward buldge at both ends.

From the information available, the canister weight on MS Dual and Helix seem to match up. But the MS Dual has a seam at the end of the canister, while the Helix has a continuous slope down to the tip piping. Does this difference rule out a direct match? The Corksport canisters look more similar.

4 Comparison URLs:

Raptor75 MS Dual exhaust photos

Corksport's canoster photo

Corksport's tip photo

Soundwise, they seem to be close based on internet clips, with the MS Dual possibly sounding closer, and the Corksport possibly sounding like it has less bass. Although, the Corksport seems to have silenced tips to contend with?

We should have a meet to compare the sounds. I can bring the Helix if someone can bring their MS Dual and Corksport. Currently I'm in Waukegan, IL but possibly driving to Florida next month.

I have the Corksport. I'll try to get underneath the car today and get the measurements for you.

Both the Corksport and the MS were at the meet Saturday night in Downers Grove (me and Al)...

Check out the Chicago meets thread - you can set up a meet there. I would say make sure you contact Al and I to make sure we can both show up, since we have the exhausts you are interested in comparing. Mine is on a 4-port, so I suppose the sound could be a little different than a 6-port, but it would give you a good idea. You could see if Raptor75 could show up - I believe he has uninstalled his MS exhaust, but you could check with him to make sure.

I will see what measurements I can get for you. Should be able to get the length with no problem. Not sure about the circumference, as I don't have one of those cloth tape measures that would give you an accurate reading for that.

I thought they used the same muffler. Corksport said Mazdaspeed stole there muffler. Or was it Corksport that stole Mazdaspeeds muffler.

The mazdaspeed mufflers are approximately 15.5 inches, measured from the end of the pipes on each side - their might be a small amount of error in there, as I couldn't get a good angle where I could see both ends at the same time while measuring. I wasn't able to get a circumference with what I had.

Sounds good. How similar do your Corksport and MS Dual sound?

I made a small post in the Chicago-area Meet. I can bring some cardboard and a tape measure.

The length of the Mazda mufflers sounds right. I did not include the little 1/2 inch on both sides down to the pipe, so if you take my 14 1/8 + 1 inch it's about your 15.5 inches.

Corksport mufflers are 11" long and 20" in diameter. The Corksport exhaust existed before Mazdaspeed Dual system came out. You can't compare mdw1000's sound with mine directly. He has a AT and I have a MT. Two different engines.

Ok. It sounds like I need to find a MT Mazdaspeed Dual to compare with then.

I'm leaving Illinois before next month so I can't make the next meet. My account cannot post to RC3 forums yet.

Al's seems louder to both of us, but as he said, the different engines might make a difference in volume, sound, etc.

If you can't make a meet and don't want to set up a meet, you might be able to get me and/or Al to meet up with you for lunch or dinner or something (a mini meet) so you could see and hear the exhausts for yourself. Mine might not be identical to the sound on a 6-port, but at least it would give you an idea. I'd be more than happy to meet up with you - anything to help out a fellow 8 owner looking to mod their car.

And mine has a super rear lip spoiler which reduces drag to almost zero and allows me to go at LUDICROUS speed, which might make the exhaust sound slightly different.

PM "Railgun" or "Merciless". They can get that fixed for you.
