Though it never hurts to tune it up.
But of course you'll need some sort of engine management system.
Cobb is the best right now. I say, right now.

Just feed them sushi and rice and you'll never need another engine management system again!

Anyone who can afford to order one at this time should do so through Mazdamaniac.com's website considering you'll also be getting his tuning service with it.

Mazda is more of a Niche type of car company, and is alot smaller than Honda to begin with, not to mention the value of the S2000 is alot more than the RX-8. The RX-8 value is horrible because of the engine reliability. Besides alot more tuner type of companies will flock to Honda because well... its HONDA. You can still make money off of the S2000 because its a solid car and had decent sales, most people dont even know what a rotary is or how to take care of one. The RX family also belongs to a certain niche of consumers inside a niche company (Mazda). All of which makes it even harder to net any profit because there is a substantial drop in consumers compared to other car companies.

While I don't know the specifics, I do recall hearing that COBB spent very very serious money on the R&D of the accessPORT. The only reason the investment paid off is due to the ability to utilize that technology across multiple platforms.
I am not aware of any company that is developing tuning technology for the RX8 and I honestly don't expect anything new to come about in the near future that isn't somehow based off of COBB's technology or some existing platform. COBB first announced their development of the AP for the RX8 in 2004 and it didn't actually hit the shelves until late 2006, early 2007.
Considering all the variables I don't see anything new on the horizon. So in this case I'd buy one new since nothing at this point is guaranteed except that.
