Tough decision!

Hey guys, I'm debating on whether to get an HKS exhaust or an Access port.. I don't know which would be the better path. Should I get all my basic bolt ons first or just go with the access port and run on the default map it provides? Any feed back would be great! Currently my car performance wise is stock. I have an AEM intake on the way and was planning to go with an HKS, but from what I've been reading, correct me if I'm wrong but the access port would be a beneficial gain even on a stock set up..

Thanks in advance!

AP from Mazdamaniac. The tune that comes on the AP is not the best and is unsafe with the AEM intake

Get the AP.
If your plan is to slightly mod the car with bolt-ons you can always purchase another calibration service period through MM.

I agree. The AP default stock tune won't work as well. There is no one size fits all, haha but can you specify by "unsafe"? Can the intake make that much of a drastic change with the tune?

I think the AP is probably better but remember its going to more than likely take you months to get a tune back from MM. So if you plan on buying an exhaust soon after the AP or any other performance mods then maybe just buy those first then get the ap and start tuning once you have the couple of mods you plan on buying.

Not with the current procedure... it takes way less than months now!

Have you noticed the new thing MM is doing with tuning? It seems to be working really well and turn around times are much faster.

The tune that comes with the cobb literally says do not use with aftermarket intakes. AFRs go very lean

+1 on AP, it would have been mod #1 for me if they were available for the S2's

I'd go with your performance mods first so that you have everything complete prior to purcahing the AP. You wouldn't want to be mid way through purchasing / installing your performance mods and have your time limit run out on MM's custom service for the AP.

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback. I decided to go grab the exhaust first with a mid-pipe maybe the one from agency power and headers soon after. But I will get the AP asap afterwards. Hopefully before the month ends! Has anyone heard the HKS hi power stacked with the RB mid-pipe? Or the racing beat race exhaust single tip? I cant find any feedback on that exhaust..

please, don't ask for advice anymore, unless it's a troubleshooting issue. That's why I always hated 'opinion' threads...

people don't want advice, they just hope people agree on their preconceptions so they dont feel as bad about their poor purchase

Get the Cobb AP. Let MazdaManiac do his magic with tuning your car. Even if you get some extra cash again you still can buy the HKS exhaust and it will not have any affect on the tune.

LOL. Thanks guys for really giving the smack on that one. I shouldn't have said anything until I was sure. I called the RB and talked to one of the reps there and what not. Turns out and I didn't really order anything.. haha, but I did get the RB midpipe from one of the guys on this forum. I am going with the access port this week (ordering it friday) instead. After all that, I think the CAI, Mid Pipe and Access port, it would be a good start for mods.

Why are people saying get a tuning device before getting mods?
Surely you need the mods on the car, THEN you tune it?
