Trust/GReddy Turbo & GREX Brakes

OPTION magazine #1, 2004 pits the Blitz compressor (~210whp) against the Trust/GReddy TD06-18G (output~260whp).

From what I understand, the kit will premiere at the 2004 Tokyo Auto Salon before appearing state-side for US-Spec testing. Once completed, GReddy (USA) will decide whether or not to start distribution here... I would guess April+ '04. All conjecture, though.

Thanks to whoever can translate...

260 horsies to the wheels? Now that I'd think about paying 6900 bucks on.

If I was looking to buy a Turbo that is :D

Not to mention the fact that I have no idea if thats even any good :D :D :D

FYI,

I think the article says the boost is .4kg/cm (5.7PSI) without the intercooler and .5kg/cm (7.1 PSI) with the intercooler. I think it also says that the .4kg/cm is made as low as 3000 RPM meaning this kit was designed for torque. With that in mind, from the graphs it looks like this kit is going to feel like a little eaton supercharger attached to the car.

Any better translations of the article are more than welcome. That is my stab at it.

I know we all love turbos but , dont turbos destroy an engine at around 100,000 miles.

ArtnWho? Bah! Robs WRX was so gay :p JK, that was the sickest WRX I have ever seen in North America ( and trust me, I've seen more then enough!), and I dont know how many times at every single show I went to with him I kept nagging him to keep the dam thing. Oh well, now he's got an RX-8, and Im sure whatever he does to this car next can only get better . BTW, since Im kissing your *** right now again, mind putting in a good word at Greddy for me too (hint hint!)

Efini 8: Justin, right? Congrats to your team on the SpeedOptions feature!

Marvin: Dude... I heard the guy blew his engine a week after he bought it from me? Do me a favor and ask your mafia connections what really happened...

You say 260hp at the wheels. Is that a 260hp gain from the stock 238? Or would the turbo only bring the total HP up to 260?

238HP@Flywheel

The Mazda Specs (all auto mfg's do this) are measured at the flywheel, not the rear wheels.
260HP at the rear wheels is probably upping the power about 30~35% - that is alot of power.

but not by much. if my memory serves me right, ps is the metric term for horsepower and the conversion is about ~1=0.98

Those look great! Are you gonna have the turbo installed on your car shawrf? I'm not wrong to assume that your sponsored by GReddy right?

Did I post stuff on this before?

Sorry... I don't have a scanner and the wife took my digital camera, so no pics from the mags this time...

BUT... first Check the "L" Reflash thread in "The Tech Garage"... to sum up my post... there is no "J-spec" tune... at least power wise.

On to the meat...

Forced Induction under development (most about 70% complete at the time of the articles)

Blitz
Knight Sports
Trust/Greddy
... there are some others, but not kits and probably not coming to the US...

I'm not going to translate the whole article for everyone... below are basically a summaries

RX-7 Magazine....

GReddy TURBINE KIT TRUST

If you think of Trust, you only think of turbos. Trust is taking the lead in turbo tuning for the RX-8. Trust's RX-8 turbo kit, T618Z, uses the turbine often used for Silvia and GTR tuning as its base. More than clearning concerns about space and PCM/ECU, this is being developed for a low price. NOTE: This is run by the e-Manage unit

In the present tune the max boost is 0.5K which puts out a max of 268ps/7100rpm and max torque 30.8kg m/5300rpm. If you're thinking more boost = more power, going above this level of tune will mean a need to look again starting with the injectors at a lack of capacity. In the end the use of stock parts where possible will lead to lower cost. Taking this in combination with the RX-8's character lead to less of looking for power and more looking for street usable torque.

There is virtually no turbo lag and pickup is very good. Even up to 9000rpm the 0.4kg/cm2 boost doesn't drop off. Mid-range torque feels much fatter. This setting is it! If you're running it on a circut, your shift point is 8,000rpm.

The question is how much will this cost me?

OWNER'S IMPRESSION (7 people got to test drive for 15 min each)

Their general comments are that while the RX-8 doesn't feel like it has much low-end torque, for their everyday driving style, the car has got plenty of power. They didn't feel any need to add a turbo or anything for more power. After the test drive, their feelings were that this is how the car should feel. They'd be interested for around 400,000 JPY.

KNIGHT SPORT S/C KIT

SIDE BAR:

Q: Why a supercharger instead of a turbo?

A: In this day and age, exhaust emissions is a big concern. Going forward the power increase will have to be through supercharging.

To solve the issue of the lack of low-end torque with the RX-8 we chose to use a supercharger. Of course we could have chosen a turbo, however, thinking about sloving the the problems of exhaust emissions and heat, from now on in this day and age, power increases are best served by a supercharger.

Night Sports didn't use a traditional Lyshom (sp?) supercharger, but instead a turbocharger type supercharger. Instead of using exhaust gas to spin the turbine, it has a gear turned by a belt. Compared to a roots or Lyshom unit it's more compact. It has the merit of being able to up the boost easily simply by changing the wheel diameter and pulley proportion.

Since the RX-8 debuted, Knight Sports felt that there wasn't enough low-end torque. From 1 year ago they developed the same unit for the FC. Present max boost is 0.3K, compared to stock 30-40ps increase.

NOTE: Works with just re-flash the stock PCM/ECU and includes an intercooler

When you actually take it out... "It would have been great if it was fast from the beginning!" is the first impression. It is great driving around town. The car feels like it is supposed to, but according to the original setting once you get up over 6,000rpm the boost drops off... it doesn't feel as fun in the high rpm range. This seems best suited for the 210ps base and AT unit... buy the car for cheap and drop a little FI on. They want to keep the price under 400,000 JPY...

OWNER'S IMPRESSION (3 people test drove)

The Knight RX-8 has more flavor added than a turbo. The torque feels much fatter and the power is much more linear than a turbo and very torquie. The car especially feels great around 6000rpm. Even one person who loves turbos said that it feels like increased stock power and it great how quickly it makes low-end torque. At Night Sports, it's presently set at 6,000rpm MAX boost 0.3 kg/cm2 and the reason for the response like that, but... from the RX-8 owners' expectation, maybe it would have also been better from a lower speed.

From RE Rotary magazine...

BLITZ

Compared to the exhaust gas driven turbo, the crankshaft (excentric shaft) driven supercharger has the advantages of no turbo lag and good response. The compressor unit is fairly compact and has another advantage of not taking up too much engine room.

The kit is due out around March - April. Blitz says it's still under development, but looking at the schdule, it's undergoing it's final tuning now. Blitz's power goal was 260ps. When you write it like this you may think "it only makes 10ps over stock?!" HOwever, During Blitz's tests the RX-8 only put out 180ps... thus 180ps is the start point. So adding the compression is +80ps.

Due out in spring, the compressor is expected to go for less than 450,000 JPY. Stock + 80hp really changes the feeling of the car. Of course, it's supposed to feel fast.

More in the next issue.

NOTES: Dvelopment plans are for boost around 0.4 being good for 260-270ps and 30kg of torque. Peak torque is normally around 5,500rpm, drops down below 3,500rpm.

Cheers for the translation! I have the RX-8 RE Magazine and had no idea what it said. From what I know about forced induction, what I believe about the character of the RX-8, and what I have seen in forms of packaging for the different options, it is the Blitz I am most interested in using the lysholm supercharger. I look forward to more information from them in the coming months.

I really like the car in NA form so it would have to be a very very well designed kit to make me jump. Of course the price would have to be realistic as well.
