How exactly do you see a turbo from the dealer? Unbolt the engine, lift it out of the body and check the back of it for a turbo?
The turbo on my Golf 1.8t was so buried in the engine compartment that it was not visible with the hood open. You just had to trust that VW put it in there.
I'm skeptical about this rumor.

Yup that's right, there are 300 limited production MAZDASPEED RX-8's in Japan right now. And yes, they will bring it to the US in Turbo form, with around 300 hp somewhere in 2005.
However, what you're friend saw in Japan was NOT Turbo. It just looks like it is. The MAZDASPEED RX-8 has a lot of refinements, but one of them does not include a turbo.
Still, if you can show some pics with the turbo, then I guess you proved me wrong.

There are to many rumors floating around and nothing to show. We have been hearing this since day one and still no forced induction, even in the aftermarket. Motor Trend, a very trusted source of things to come.... NOT, just stated that Mazda will produce a supercharger for production RX8s. My dealer stated this as well and also said anyone with and N/A RX8 will be able to get it added on and keep the warranty, but who knows where he is getting his information from. So what is it? Turbo's for the Japanese because of less stringent emissions standards and superchargers for us. Who knows, I'll guess will see it when it happens.

I doubt they will make another Turbo Rotary... They had too many warranty issues in the past with them... Every rumor I hear is a Supercharged Renesis.
...but I guess only time will tell

Yeah, I saw turbo RX-8s as well.... at the Tokyo Auto Salon. :p
Mazda has not announced and is not (offically) planning a turbo RX-8 in Japan or anywhere else. The MAZDASPEED edition RX-8 that is currently available in Japan does not have a turbo.

The Mazdaspeed RX-8 in Japan is supposed to have a supercharger, according to the mazda website....or at least it used to say they were planning on it, maybe they shelved it.

I don't think RX8 XTC really meant Turbo. He probably got confused and he really meant a SUPERcharger, or at least thats what happened to his informer.
Most people think the words are synonymous.
Ok, maybe thats just me.

As I posted on another thread last month, my sales manager here at a local dealership in California has spoken with the District Operations Manager ( higher up on the totem pole than the District Sales Mgr. and speaks directly to Mazda North America ) and he says that Mazda is indeed working on a supercharged version of the MazdaSpeed RX8 that will be well over 300 horsepower.
Right now, Mazda is just fiddling with the EPA's formula for gas-guzzler issues in determining what route to go in so far as how much horsepower should be produced.. In any event, this car will most likely show up at the end of this year, or early 2005.
My bet is in early 2005, with the North American International Auto Show able to debut this new RX8 in January in Detroit.
Stay tuned!
True, Mazda has a MazdaSpeed version of the RX8 out in Japan. This model has been out since last December in a very limited quantity (300). But this version is not equipped with any major engine performance improvements.

Can someone please explain me with a few words what supercharging is? I thought it was the same as turbocharging... but from what I read I know now that I was wrong!
P.S. How can a 300HP model be produced in japan since law over there allows only up to 280HP in any production car?

RotorManic...
In the most simple terms a turbocharger and a supercharger ARE the same thing. They both compress the intake of an engine in order to force more air inside the engine. Looking a little more closely at the two, you have various types of superchargers... lyshom, Eaton, Roots and centrifugal. These all have in common that they use a pulley from the engine to drive the compressor, however the actual design of the compressor varies, with a centrifugal essentially being a turbocharger turbine driven by an engine belt and pulley instead of exhaust gas. As I indirectly explained a turbocharger uses hot exhaust gases to drive a turbine which in turn runs a compressor.
As far as 300hp in Japan goes, several cars produce more than 280hp in Japan. The Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline GTR are known to produce in the 300hp range. The 280hp "limit" is a "gentlemen's agreement" between Japanese manufacturers that they won't publish horsepower numbers in excess of 280hp. Thus high-end sports cars are easily producing more than 300hp, however, they are only rated as 280hp. There is no law limiting horsepower. The same thing applies to motorcycles as well. The speed limit is a different story though... that is legally limited to 180km/h, I believe.
