Umnitza intake. Thoughts, issues, conclusion. 8/23/06

Ok I decided to install the intake tonight.

The directions were bland, and obviously written to fit on one piece of paper.

Getting the stock housing out is easy enough. It's like looking at a puzzle with about 3 or four pieces. You can clearly, and obviously see where everything goes and fits.

Everything screwed in tight, except the MAF. I felt like it didnt sit snugg against it's clip. The screw holes weren't flush. I'll reexamine it to make sure I did everything right.

Got everything plugged in and tightened up.

Took it out for a rip.

Like everyone says. At idle, it sounds stock, but depending on how much gas you give it, it gets louder. Very loud at WOT.

So I took it down my road. Opened it up at the first oportunity. With the windows open it actually hurt my left ear. Kinda odd. I mean, this thing screams. I'll keep the windows closed more.

Brought it to a industrial park where alot of us used to race when we were younger. Once a few stragglers from the daily commute were gone I really dragged it down the entire strip.

Here's the odd part. It felt laggy. I watched the mph go up to 60 and it seemed to take longer than normal. The sound could be screwing with my perception of speed, but it definitely felt a little sluggish. The only indicator that I did not lose any power of speed was that I still chirped second and third.

Has anyone else noticed a laggyness with it?

Ultimately it looks great, it was shipped to me really quick, and it sounds totally awesome. Pure *****. I'm gonna take it out again tonight, once I'm a little more alert. Long day at work.

Thanks for reading, Thanks Umnitza.

Edit: BTW, Should I post this as a new thread? It will be easier to find in a search, and I honestly just feel like it's going to get buried in the boards.

Update 8/23/06.

So even after driving into work the day after the install, I felt the same lag, sputtering issues.

Noticeable when accelerating in first gear. The car would spastically jump up and down, like someone was taking their hand and putting it in front of the intake, then removing it, repeatedly.

All gears above that worked fine except 4th gear, I would get more sputtering at around 65mph at 4k-6k rpms.

When I got home after work I let the engine cool before touching anything.

Popped the hood, and just took a general look over the intake, and all its parts.

I noticed that on the MAF, it was not sitting flush against it's metal housing. One of the screws had actually not been screwed all the way in. (embarrasing).

It was causing the MAF housing, and it's o-ring to not sit flush against the metal of the intake. There was probably alot of air circulating through that tiny opening.

I pulled the screw out, and tried to screw it back in again. It was trying to go in on an angel. THis is most likely why it was not screwed down the first time. After putting some pressure on the screw I got it to sink into the correct thread line and turn in just fine.

Socked it down, and closed everything up again.

Took it out for a little ride. Felt absolutely perfect.

ANyone else who reported hesitation or sputtering should be absolutely sure that everything is socked down tight. Not soo tight that your going to crack anything, but you know what I mean.

THe intake runs, and sounds beautiful, it also looks really nice.

Conclusion. Awesome products, great service from Umnitza, great shipping speed, everything was great. The directions are a little vague, and could throw off some amatuers like myself. I managed to get it on their though, and with a little learn the hard way value, I got it all working in the end.
