What was that exhaust again?
#30
I have purchased parts from Gruppe-S in the past for my Subaru's, so I thought I would give them a call today regarding the Helix RX8 exhaust. The guy I spoke with immediately took the posture that it was a "dead" project, and that Helix was not interested in producing the RX8 exhaust. I told him that there were a number of interested people that would love to have the exhaust, and if we could pull together a genuine list of interested buyers would they re-consider. He said that they had already done that at some point in the past, and that Helix evidently no longer had the "molds" for this exhaust and were no longer interested saying it was a dead project.
Now, I realize that the term "mold" is really incorrect for an exhaust, but the exhaust pipe jig settings and engineering spec are obviously important to the effort. I am still interested in knowing more about Rotary Extremes "partnership" with Helix on the RX8 exhaust project. Perhaps Helix never actually had the manufacturing spec, and this died with Rotary Extreme? Maybe Helix can't sell the exhaust because they don't own the design rights? I cannot imagine if Helix had engineered and developed the exhaust in-house, that they would just suddenly drop it like a hot potatoe especially considering all of the RX8 owners they could sell to worldwide.
Anyone know any of the guys that used to be with Rotary Extreme? If so, maybe they could shed some light on why the exhaust never made it off the ground. Beyond that it seems like the only way we will see an exhaust like this is if someone copies the design and sells it under another name.

I'll pay $2,000 for that exhuast. I'm way to picky when it comes to what my car sounds like, from every squeak and jingle down to the sound when i shut my door. The exhaust is the biggest thing on my list right now

I did notice that Rotary Extremes old telephone number, which is of course disconnected now, is a (510) 683 telephone number and Gruppe-S telephone number is (510)783. Its the telephone guy in me, but those prefixes are close enough that they may be served out of the same central office. I wonder if Rotary Extreme was affiliated with Gruppe-S in some fashion? That would explain why Helix might be "partnering" with them considering Gruppe-S status as a primary distributor. Maybe this is common knowledge, and I am commenting on the obvious. If this is the case I apologize.
If there was a tie-in though, the point of concern would be that if Gruppe-S were somehow involved in the project from the beginning, and somehow it died with the decision to not serve the RX8 community, then any discussions with them about resurrecting the exhaust would fall on deaf ears. Realistically I can't imagine Gruppe-S wasn't involved somehow, considering they are the sole wholesale Helix products gateway into the US, and any partnering projects would have to be blessed by them at the very least.

I contacted Gruppe-S back on 4/11 via telephone call, and gruppe-s (at least the guy I spoke with)said that Helix is not interested in pursuing it any further. When I asked if it would make a difference if we rallied some buyers to help underscore the level of interest the individual I was talking with said that he thought that had already been tried, and that Helix was still not interested.
hitman408, thanks for clarifying the fact that Rotary Performance was not affiliated with Gruppe S. The reason I was thinking down that track (other than geography) is that Gruppe-S is the "only" authorized US wholesale distributor for Helix products. The likelihood that Helix would work out some side deal with Rotary Extreme to develop an RX8 exhaust without Gruppe S somehow being involved seems highly unlikely. Perhaps Rotary Extreme was just a business acquaintence introduced through an exclusive US distributor (Gruppe S)for Helix products who knows.
