Why does the typhoon intake destroy my mileage?
I decided totry out the K&N intake this week andits definitely going back on the shelves. It has completely slaughtered the mileage I previously had which was already bad enough. Whereas before I was getting 16 mpg in the city and thought itcould only get better from there - now Imdown to a disgusting 12 or 13 and Im driving basically the same way as I was before. Thats worse than the city mpg of a damn Viper.
I always tended to go WOT w/my Rx8 whenever there was enough open road ahead - otherwise keeping it below 35 like the sane drivers out there when the streets were mildly crowded - and thats exactly whatIm doing w/the intake. Though Ilove the sound of the K&N Ihavent been purposely flooring the car around to hear it roar. It seems that even w/mild grandma driving (ie nothing above 4000 rpm) my mileage is suffering.
Im guessing that thanks to the MAF issues w/this intake the ecu is confused and is burning fuel faster. In older posts people mentioned they gotbetter mileage after putting on the typhoon but I dont understand how the hell that is so. I do like this intake but thereare not enough benefits to out weigh my insane mpg drop. The last thingIm going to try before returning the intake is disconnecting the battery for a couple hours and seeing if that does anything beneficial.

AlsoI dont understand how it is that Im still hearing what sounds like the old intake (in fact if I push the gas half way in the car soundsexactly like it used to stock and you donteven hear the K&N unless the throttle is all the way into the floor). Is there more than one intake on the car?

I have another question: is the K&N supposedto make the car sound like its farting all the time when youre driving w/half the throttle pushed in? Thats exactly what Im hearing on my automatic when I dont go WOT - and honestly I think the intake sounds like **** when youre not driving it full throttle.

No ones goingto answer any of my questions? Ive searched throughold K&N posts and found nothing relatedto my problems. I knowIm out of the loop here and that K&N waspopular several months backbut I wantedto try for myself. Ihave 3 days left to send it back

send it back
Sounds like maybe you should send it back while you can, and if you want to get another after you figure it out, order another later.
NO experience with the K&N except my suburban, and then it was just a filter, not an intake. The ECU may have to re-learn how much air is returning to the engine if the front end is breathing better???
