Why is this RX-8 so fast?
It was a weekend of record-breaking racing and back-to-back wins at Virginia Motorsports Park for the Virginia NHRA Sport Compact Nationals.
Ken Scheepers, in his Mazdaspeed RX-8, raced to his first back-to-back win in Modified. Following up his win from Moroso earlier in the month he defeated fellow Mazda driver Dee Karagiannis. Karagiannis broke during the run and Scheepers easily won with a time of 7.59 seconds at 179.71 mph.
“It’s awesome and totally incredible,” said Scheepers. “I came up here by myself and it’s rewarding for all the hard work to pay off. I am sorry that I didn’t back up my run of 7.27 mph, but I am excited about having the fastest ET and MPH for a two-rotor rotary. I am getting calls from all over Puerto Rico. The record has been held by Puerto Ricans for decades and now it’s mine. I want to thank NHRA and Sony for supporting us racers. Also, I want to thank Mazdaspeed, Idemitsu, Mickey Thompson, NGK, PCS and Innovate Motorsports. I especially want to thank Kilo and Jesus Padilla for my engine, and also Tito Chassis for a safe car.”

2. Is there anything that he is doing that can help the rest of us?
I'm curious about what guys around here think on this matter.

Good find... But we've seen people with an large number (though not those specific mods or methanol) of mods, including turbo, that are not performing on that level. We can't even get guys, with FI, to post any drag times faster than 5.9 sec in 0-60 or faster than 13 sec in the 1/4. But, Ken's modified RX-8 is crazy light at 2,000 pounds.

it is impressive looking, and sounds different than any other drag cars at the track.
when i seen it in the pits the first thing i looked for was the 13B on the block, i really expected to see a 3 rotor.
the guy on the right is the driver.
they had a slow day whene i seen them, only ran a 9.35 @118mph but it was the first round of qualifing last weekend in Indiapolis.

There are several things about racing, in general, the casual observer doesn't seem to appreciate, like the fact that the competition is on many fronts. In order to be competitive a racing team must adapt to the weather and track conditions, must make their car durable, and must always do it for the lowest cost possible. Even highly-funded teams have a difficult time getting the most for their money.
