Black alternator housing
Anyone think its a good idea?
I've got an alternator sitting here that has a bad regulator. Considering rebuilding it, new brushes/bearings/regulator/diodes, and cleaning/etching/spraying the housing in high temp black. then offering it up for sale.
Worth it? How much would you be willing to pay for a cool black housing alternator vs just a plain rebuilt one?
also.. if any of the power supplies I have built are spec'd for it, there is the possibility that I may anodize it instead of high temp paint. Just a thought though, I wont build or alter any of the power equipment i have just to do this

I didnt find a suitable pic at the time. Figured everyone has seen or could imagine what a black painted or anodized alternator housing looked like :P
I have no PC ability, never looked into the prospect of doing something like that at home and doubt it would be worthwhile or doable. I could send it out, but have no interest. Paint/anodizing/rebuild whatever would all be done here in house

your welcome to if you wish!
I am going to rebuild the alternator. Just wondering if it is worth the little extra effort to make it pretty. I personally dont care, its not going in my car anyway.

That did turn out VERY nice Stealth! I have no intent on spending that kind of cash though.
For high temp paint, the only thing i am missing to do it properly is the etching primer. For anodizing, as long as one of my supplies is suitable, I need nothing more

FAIL
i went to start disassembly so i could begin prep work.... the only iron i have capable of desoldering the lugs to the stator windings is dead. all my others are cheapies and dont have the power
now i have 2 things to fix for this project. this also puts a pause on the amp i'm reconstructing, and some high voltage(~20KV) things i've been working on I need to get a proper digital solder station...

can do somethin if you want, but i've no interest in more projects, I've already got too many little things going on, and i'm trying to slim down my "hobby time" stuff. I'm about to have a whole new project coming up as soon as the car is sold

Anyone have a DIY on how to disassemble the alternator? Looking to get a spare one to rebuild and paint just wondering if I need a bearing puller or anything to get it apart? And the stator is soldered to the casing?

It mostly comes apart like youd think, 4 bolts on the case then pull that apart, next I believe you can pull the rotating assembly out. Next I believe are 3 phillips screws, to get to one you will need to move the stator to the side. After those I think that whole piece pulls out.
When putting it back together there are two spring loaded tabs that prevent the rotor from going back in. On the back side of the alternator is a hole that you can fit a paperclip in. You need to push those tabs down at the same time push the paper clip further into the whole to prevent them from popping up until you get the rotor back in.
You'll also have to find the areas on the inside of the casing where you need to allow metal to metal contact. Theres 2 spots I think.
