Do you have a standard filter in there or is it a hi-flow model like K&N? If not hi-flow, that is probably the reason.

I also cut most of the top off, and replaced it with plexi. I've seen this done a few times. Most of the others I have seen are a little better than what I ended up with. Just another idea.

You need to seal your plexi with some sort of sealant or you are going to have a leak and who knows what will get sucked in behind your air filter. You would normally also install the plexi on the inside of the box so you don't have to see the sealant. And please please please tell me that your air filter is still in there somewhere.

I second or third this... I think I might of felt a little more power after resetting my ECU but it could be the Placebo effect... I did however notice a sound difference... But I didnt feel as much power to magically chirp the tires... It felt about the same, but it felt slower getting to the A/T's gov of 125 a little slower... It could also be me though just searching for problems or gains....

I did this yesterday and didn't notice any significant difference either. Though, the jerking at low speeds seemed to be less violent. It also felt like it had an easier time going uphill. I have a K&N filter coming, so we'll see if I notice any difference once I get that in there.

You are both missing the point.....the filter restricts airflow, and if the edges around the plexi is leaking, wouldn't that just add more airflow? Airflow=HP.

I did look at putting the plexi on the inside, but that is a much longer project. Maybe I will pick up a spare and try it sometime.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Wow. Unfiltered air going in to your engine is a really bad idea. I think you're missing the point of the filter to begin with. It's not just for looks.

Actually air should be fine, its all the other bits that the filter should stop.

Of course I left the filter in, I sealed it too. I just though it was funny that those two assumed the worst. You cant even see all of the horn in the picture, so of course the filter is not visible. The sealant I used however is visible.

Um yes. that's what I said.

People probably didn't get your joke because they assumed you didn't know what you were doing. And you didn't give them any reason to think otherwise.

Can't see a lick of sealant in that picture...maybe it was done afterward or is just so uniform I can't make it out in the picture. Either way...glad you at least understand that random bits of anything are bad unlike this one...

well i only skimmed throughout this forum and i was wondering if anyone did what i did...
my original plan was to make my own intake system after finding and MAF sensor adapter for different cars in Autozone. i bought the adapter it was perfect but, the piping was to small... so i returned it. i then slowly started taking apart my stock Airbox and this is what i did.

i initially started by taking the two "screens" that was mentioned early on in the forum. and then i took off the K&N filter i had at the time and the bottom piece of the Airbox.

and this is what im not sure if anyone else did, but i "unclipped" the screen thats on top of the plastic piping. i first unscrewed it off so it would be easier to remove the top piece. i took it off with a flat head took me 5 min.

then i got a air filter that's been sitting around and snug fit it in the piping....

and this is where the controversy kicks in....

i snug fit it in the piping by wrapping duct tape around the air filter so id be able to squeeze it in the pipe and it wouldn't get loose and fall off...

i then sit the airbox down went out for a test and the sounds improved miraculously... from what i can tell i lost some low end torque but gain high end so its a win some lose some situation.......

ive had it on for the last month or two and it hasn't given me any problem it stays in its place and sounds/feels wonderful....

so yeah if anyone is interested in seeing the setup or seeing any kind of pictures just ask and ill get some soon

dude,

that bell shaped tube is suppose to increase the air's velocity as it enters pass the filter. its its sole duty to do so...

if you took a good look at RB's design in the revi... it actually is no different, except it uses a round filter thats closer to the velocity tube instead of a large area panel filter and the front section of the filter element capped off.

don't get me vvrong here, i'm sure RB must've improved something... but they still incorporated the velocity tube tucked inside the filter so it must be performing some things properly.

thanx chuck. so i will have to leave it to be save to say removing it can only hurt more things than gain... do we both agree on the same?

actually... what do YOU think of the 2 plates people often remove (including me if using oem filter) in the stock box to "improve" flow or unclutter up the box?

do you:

-agree it serves better function in the box, unmodified
-is worth better to modify and retain
- or simply doesn't do a damn thing, oem's are smoking crack. ditch them.

god... its giving me an urge to have another look. and i really don't feel like taking out the oem box just to remove the plates again... sigh... all out of curiosity.

^I can vouch for this - i remember distinctly bringing this up at a meet and showing a few members at a car meet. We did this on a couple of cars that night to demonstrate - the next morning, this thread was born.

I remembered when i first stumbled on this forum i was looking for simple modifications that can be done to stock parts - the one that charles wrote up was the first one i read. At the time i didn't know it was charles but now it seems apparent.

I did this:
Removed the two walls and added a K and N drop in filter, kept both screens for now.
Did not reset.

I removed the two walls first which took all of 3 minutes at the most.
I did not completely take out the air box because I'm lazy but my lazy butt was able to get the walls out will zero troubles.
I could hear a slightly different sound at start up.
A little bit deeper but not louder.

Drove to Advanced Auto for the K and N filter and I could not tell if there was much of a difference in how the car felt.

Put the K and N in and my car does feel smoother.
No sound change that I can hear but it seems to rev easier.

All in all I would say do it if you add a “free flow” filter but do not think you'll get faster.
I think you will feel that the car runs smoother and revs better.

So does anyone have any data?
A comparison of MAF reading before and after?
I have seen another thread of this mod by some guy who used a Blitz steel mesh filter and was able to retain both top and bottom of the air box. He never stated what diameter the tube is to select the right filter. I PM'd him and never received a reply.
